So im leaving tomorrow night to go to London and was wondering how metal detectors affect video cameras. Will i be ok? How about the MiniDV tapes? Will they get screwed? Any info would help. Thanks
Besides, airport employees will tell you they don't care, and with the tight security etc you will have to put your equipment through whatever they say!
Sadly the tightened security has made travel more time consuming, but you can "always" demand a hand search for photo/video equipment.
It adds time, but can always be done, by every airline.
I believe that x-ray machines will only effect high speed and infrared films as it may fog the film. I have never heard of an x-ray machine effecting a video camera or tapes.
i travel roughly 10-15 times yearly with my cameras in tow...and ill relay my experiences
most of the time, my request for a hand inspection is not honored. DV tapes, so im told, MUST go through the scanners to be permitted past security checkpoints. I have never had any lost footage from the scanners, and now I never ask for a hand inspection, as everything ive ever put through one of these scanners has come out perfectly.
Ive had bad experiences with hand inspection. On more then one instance, ive had to ask security to handle my camera equipment with care. I had a security officer TAP on my fisheye lens with his pen. Needles to say, I just let my equipment go straight through the scanner. 50% of the time, due to all the electronics in the bag, it gets an extra hand inspection anyway
