Metabones V2 doesn't seem to fit properly

My adapter just arrived this morning. It fits onto the FS700 just fine, but my EF lens and my EF adapter do not fit onto it properly. After I match the white or red dots and start turning it, it makes this little 'ke ke ke' friction noise and comes to a hard stop before where the pin is supposed to fall into place. Nothing like fitting them onto my Canon 60D. And of course I don't want to force it.

The only EF lens I have is the 18 - 200 kit lens. Granted, it is not supposed to electronically communicate with the camera, but I assumed that it would still physically fit onto the adapter.

Am I doing something wrong?

EDIT: the EF adapter is an M42 to EF dummy I bought a while ago. It fits onto my Canon 60D just fine.

UPDATE: I took the metabones to the store and tried a couple of 50mm's and none of them would fit either.

Thanks.

Ok. I went to the store and tried a couple of 50mm's. None of them worked. So I'm pretty sure I have a defect.

where does m42 come into play?

It's a M42 to EF adapter. The EF end doesn't fit on the metabones.

But that doesn't matter now. After trying a bunch of EF lenses none of them work.

The 18-200 kit lens is definitely EF-S, the Canon mount side on the M42 adapter could also be based on EF-S. It could be that the Metabones only accepts EF?

I tried a couple of EF lenses at the store. They don't fit. The clerk couldn't fit them in either as I thought I was retarded.

And according to metabones' website, EFS lenses work as well.

Waiting for an email from metabones now...

If you tried multiple EOS lenses and none of them fit, there is a problem for sure. I have the Metabones V1 and all my EOS lenses fit very well.

So Mark from info@metabones.com told me to try rotating it really hard and I did and it works. Good man. I just have to force it in.

Extra good news: the aperture works on my 18 - 200 kit lens. I think even IS too but I'm not 100% sure.

EDIT: Yes the IS works! God is good!

Thanks.

The tightness of V2 was increased significantly and it is now much tighter than a genuine Canon body. This change was based on user-input trying to use follow-focus where even the tiniest amount of play or looseness would cause havoc. I think we indeed succeeded on eliminating looseness but the price to pay for that is it is harder to mount/dismount a lens with V2 now.

If by mounts you mean on the lens side, we have a polycarbonate mount Canon which has undergone more than 1,000 mount/dismount cycles on the strengthened Metabones adapter yet its mount still has not been broken.

Proper hard chrome-plating is very capable of wear resistance and it will only do much better.

Awesome! Thank you.

I suggest removing the metabones adaptor from the camera every time you change over lenses - you dont want to put stress on the little e-mount - it is not very strong! stress it too much and the camera to adaptor join will have more play than the original issue between the lens and adaptor.

Re. tightness - the sprung parts on the inside of the metabones (shown on your photos) look very proud - they look far too deep for my liking. a couple of little rubber pads mounted in recesses on the front of the flange would have been a better option IMO. that much pressure when it comes to metal on metal contact and slowly either the lens or the adaptor will wear away - chances are it will be the lens.

Personally, I think the fix should have been done at the camera to adaptor join. this is where the majority of the play is due to the very tiny lens retaining pin, and the tolerances there - maybe as much as 0.25mm of play on the e-mount. Canon lens mounts are really sturdy in my experience. - very little play between a canon camera and a canon lens.

if you find play between camera (e-mount) and adaptor, try putting some latex (from a non lubricated condom) over the emount before attaching the adaptor. Then snip around on the inside and outside once the adaptor is in place. this will stop and turning. just take care not to damage the sensor when snipping the latex on the inside edge!!

Thank you for the very illuminating insight regarding play on the E-mount side. In my humble opinion, the customer who attempted follow focus with V1 may have used some support rod on the tripod mount of the adapter. Otherwise, as you said, there is not much point at all making the EF-mount side any tighter than the E-mount side.

Regardless, I took all this back to Metabones and we had some lengthy discussions. We decided to scale back the tightness ever so slightly so as not to make lens mounting/dismounting overly difficult.

In the end, it is not all that difficult to adjust those 3 leaf springs.

I think the issues with e mount play will be a hard one to fix completely - particularly with regard to focus pulling lenses with more inertia in the focus ring - the retaining pin is where the play is (the hole on the flage face is significantly larger than the pin itself). A couple of silicone rubber pads inset into some recesses in the flange face of the metabones flange face (camera side) which just press against the e mount flange face and are squeezed between both faces would be enough to keep movement at bay. I have used a layer or PVC electrical insulation tape between the adaptor and the camera in the past - just fills the gap and stops rotation when pulling focus.
