Metabones Speed Booster

With speed buster I do not need to buy so many lens . Example my zeiss 21 with SB behave like 21 mm but with normal adapter I get something about 35 , 50mm with SB behave like 50mm but with normal like 75mm , and 100mm with SB behave like 100mm but with normal adapter I have 135mm . Wow ,so all what I need is just 3 lens 21,50,100 +SB + normal adapter .

I've been playing with the Contax speedbooster version and it's a lovely piece of kit. Very well made and solid.

Performance has been great, i'm really enjoying what's nearly a full frame experience on my cameras, the 50mm becomes a normal lens again and the 35 is quite wide. I do notice more barrel distortion so i would be a bit dubious about anything with strong lines in. I've not tried to push any footage through lens distortion calculations yet but in time i will.

I'm not so fussed about vignetting although it doesn't seem to bad. It's a bit less contrasty on these lenses but not horribly so.

I see the biggest benefit of being able to use these lenses at close to the fov they were designed for. DOF at full frame on a 50 is quite a different look to using 35s on APS-C.

I can't wait for someone to speed boost medium format lenses down to APS-C. Now that would be an interesting look. Wide angle with shallow DOF!

cheers

Will there be barrel distortion on every lens used with the speed booster? or do higher quality lens show less imperfections? Barrel distortion is an interesting topic that im trying to find more info on.

Thanks,
Chris

Go to www.photozone.de

They do really good lens tests, often times the same lens on APS-C and Full frame. From looking at their tests, Full Frame will always have more barrel distortion, more vignetting and softer edges and corners because you are using the whole lens, whereas APS-C tends to use the sweet spot.

But with full frame you get more light and shallower DOF

thanks for the info GENE!

That why is good to get very good lens which behave good on full frame and aps-c . Some of full frame lens are not good to use it on aps-c . Example :according photozone zeiss 28 f2 is very good for full frame but for aps-c just good

The Zeiss Distagon T* 28mm f/2 ZF is a stellar performer on FX, however combined with the high resolution DX sensor of the Nikon D7000 it loses some of its sex appeal.
http://www.photozone.de/nikon--nikkor-aps-c-lens-tests/652-zeisszf2820dx?start=1

But all of this is just dry paper test , otherwise fs700,fs100 has not so many megapixel like dslr

So with you there!

Even Cooke S4's have barrel distortion that has to be removed for careful VFX work, the real question is how much barrel distortion is acceptable in your workflow, your projects and your deliverables... not a lab report...

Shooting a chart should be a part of a basic standard prep list to be checked off, pull the lens flat is a few seconds of work, and to put the distortion back in after VFX work is likewise a few seconds... you will want to put it back as it feels "off" to have a perfectly flat shot, we are used to this - like the temporal artifacts of 24fps mean film to us, where the technicaly perfect(er) 60P feels like video... imperfection is subtle and carries messages not said

Everything is probbaly diffrent in the world of stills, but i don't shoot still frames to be printed on billboards...

A sobering look at how the Canon 50mm f/1.4 + Metabones Speedbooster compares to other 35mm prime options for an NEX camera. The SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE 35mm T0.95 appears to be the winner in this shootout:

http://3d-kraft.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=138&catid=40&Itemid=2

The article does point out that the deficiencies of the Canon 50mm f/1.4 + Metabones Speedbooster combination likely lie in the Canon lens and not the Speedbooster. Still an interesting read though and I think relevant to this discussion.

The Cat's eyes Bokeh on the Canon f1.4 pushed to f1 does not surprise me at all as it's more a characteristic of Full Frame + wide open. Philip Bloom did a series of test comparing the Full Frame 1D-C to the FS700 using Metabones Speed Booster using the 85mm Canon f 1.2.

http://philipbloom.net/2013/01/13/speedbooster/

Guess what? The Bokeh and image from the 1D-X and the FS700 + Speed Booster looked almost exactly the same. The images looks very strangely similar, showing the the Speedbooster really is full frame.

PB Wrote:

It (Speed Booster) actually did bloody well…at everything except wide open, but that is not the fault of the adaptor…it’s the lens, as it does the same thing on a full frame camera when wide open (as you can see from the sample image on the 1DC below). Some people like the oval bokeh though! I don’t. I like my bokeh circular, and to get that circle at more closed off apertures you need a lot of blades!

What is really interesting is how damn close the bokeh looks on the Speedbooster image compared to the full frame 1DC image…those circles are very similar size. Not quite as large maybe as the full frame…if not it’s damn close!

What I am really curious about is how SLOWER lens in the f2 to f2.8 range does with Speedbooster shot wide open? For example, on the 24-105 f4 Canon zoom, what does the Bokeh look like at f2.8? Or on the Canon f2.8 100mm Macro, is the bokeh cat's eyes on the speed booster at f2?

Any lens at f1, the Bokeh is going to struggle, or at least I would think.

Looks great Jarbar. Did you shoot with with a Speed Booster?

I rented a Speed Booster to test it and I LOVED it. Going to buy one soon. Here's a test video of kids at Easter Sunday.

https://vimeo.com/63245456

My favorite thing about the Speed Booster is that it turns my Canon 24mm LII f1.4 into a 17mm f1.0 wide angle lens! Amazing. Previously, I was using the Tokina 11-16 at f2.8. This is 3 stops faster with the Speedbooster. Super amazing!

Thanx gene, it was shooted with previous model, Metabones Smart adapter. For macro scenes it is better to have narrow field of view for better magnification.

The field of view with SpeedBooster is amazing. When I bought FS100 two years ago, I was happy with it, but the field of view compared to fullframe DSLR was limitation, especially for indoor shoots. So it's superb to have SpeedBooster and use it with FS100 instead of DSLRs.

SpeedBooster is just about, what you showed us in your video. The field of view is so close to what eyes expects.

Hi Paul,

I also got the C/Y to NEX Speed Booster. I noticed that barrel distortion is quite severe with my two 50mm lenses (1.7 and 1.4) -- whereas with a dumb adapter I barely notice any barrel distortion at all. Rather more disturbingly (but probably relatedly) the focal plane is very decidedly unplanar. The edges are focused considerably in front of the center.

But with my 35-70/3.4 and 85/1.4, neither seems to be an issue. What is your experience?

I'm getting the 28/2 soon and will be curious and a bit anxious to find out how it performs with the SB. It seems that the aforementioned problems are worse with wide angles.

I don't have a camcorder right now and so am only using these with my NEX-7 for stills. For video they aren't as noticeable.

Another thing: my SB wouldn't focus to infinity at first, so I followed Metabones' instruction and adjusted the rear element using a jeweller's screwdriver of the right size. But after 5 or 6 incremental adjustments, the screw was completely stripped (although now I can focus to infinity). Metabones has promised to fix it for me, but I'll have to ship it back and wait. Anyone adjusting for infinity should be careful...

this thread is 11 pages of painful

can people please, please, just use http://www.abelcine.com/fov/

for goodness sake, just put the 5d on one, and any s35 in the other, and look at the difference yourselves and for pete's sake, keep in mind the adapter only works in this way for FF/vistavision/EF glass and not apsc/s35 glass.

it can be that simple, i promise.

LOL .. . Darren, you are absolutely right! :)

....it's strange that no one notice the fact: with Speed Booster image is NOT the same as with the same lens on FF cameras as Canon 5D/ 6D / 1DX... ... we can see it on this image from DPreview website:

cropcomparison.jpg

where BLUE line is frame with 35mm lens on NEX-format frame and GREEN line is the same lens, but with SPEED BOOSTER .. and you can see - it's NOT the same as entire picture from FF ...

.. and no one take into account small difference between 24X35mm frame size and 20.3 X 36mm frame which it work in that cameras IN VIDEO-MODE .. so.. image from 35mm lens is NOT the same as image with the same lens on FF camera, but smaller!

if I make the table with set of lenses I wish to use with my FS-700 and Speed Booster, it should looks like this:

1. 14mm Rokinon F2.8 on FS-700 ~ 21.3 mm and with Speed Booster ~ 15.1mm F2

2. 24mm Rokinon F1.4 on FS-700 ~ 36.6 mm and with Speed Booster ~ 25.9mm F1

3. 35mm Rokinon F1.4 on FS-700 ~53.3 mm and with Speed Booster ~ 37.84mm F1

4. 50mm Sigma F1.4 on FS-700 ~76.2 mm and with Speed Booster ~ 54.1mm F1

5. 85mm F1.4 Rokinon FS-700 ~129.5mmand with Speed Booster ~ 91.9mm F1

6. 24-105мм Ф4, IS Canon on FS-700 ~36.6 mm -160mm and with Speed Booster ~25.9mm - 113.6mm F2.8 IS
( I don's use T-number with Rokinon Cine-lenses in case to make it simple )

I'm almost certain that most people know this already.
LOL ... you are right, I know that .. but my post is like an answer to page #3 of this thread.. :) ... and also to some people, who still trying to calculate they lenses in "100mm lens with Speed Buster on FS-700 = 100mm lens on FF " way... I see some of them on other forums :)

Today I try Metabones Speed Booster ( MSB ) with Canon 24-105 F4L IS lens , Canon 70-200 F2.8L IS-II lens and Sigma 150mm F2.8 Macro lens.. Here some screenshots:

I think it's more like this.

FS700
Speed Booster adapter:

24mm T1.5/36mm crop1.5 = full frame 24 T1.1
35mm T1.5/52.5mm crop1.5 = full frame 35 T1.1
50mm T1.5/75mm crop1.5 = full frame 50 T1.1
85mm T1.5/127.5mm crop1.5 = full frame 85 T1.1

FS700 crop 1.5
MB EF-->E adapter

24mm = 36mm
35mm = 52.5mm
50mm = 75mm
85mm = 127.5mm

This is correct.
