Metabones Speed Booster, makes Nikon and Canon lenses wider and faster!!!!!

RPO has been experimenting with focal reducers like that, his discussion thread about it was interesting.

Sounds like Metabones did it right. Can't wait to see if the performance lives up to the hype.

That Conurus bloke has been around for years getting it right with the contax/canon trick

I think this is a fantastic development.

Could you patent basic physics?

I note one thing it is for e-mount, is the FFD shorter than MFT on that? Maybe there is no space to do it in MFT?

Apparently DX lenses may also work on m43 sensors...

Tokina "8-12/2," anyone?
Tamron "12-35/2?" Sigma "35-105/2?"

Looks like a 17-55mm f/2.8 DX zoom would yield basically the same FoV on the BMC as it does on DX cameras with this adapter... very interesting stuff.

Well a better way to do it is earn my bmc back, sell it get an mft. ;-)
Oh well. Well see how it plays out :)

The article is centred around the E-Mount and Canon glass but they are basically aiming this at mirrorless cameras in general and are making a Nikon mount too. I have a lot of Olympus OM glass (mainly as a collector, not for paid jobs), if this is also improving the optical quality you might suddenly see older lenses becoming very useable on paid job, I hate to say it but the popularity of the GH2 and anticipation for the fully featured GH3 and MFT BMCC is the only reason the AF was going to benefit.

this is good times, i guess a 50mm F1.2 on MFT will end up as a f1.0 85mm (50mm + sensor crop + speed booster = holy grail lol)

This is pretty awesome. I do think that it should be pointed out that it's still the same photons, just concentrated into a smaller space.

So you might not get your crop-camera to outperform a full-frame camera noise wise - UNLESS the sensor on your crop-camera is more efficient on a photon level. Which it might be.

50mm 1.2 with boost on a crop cam = 35mm 1.0 without boost on a crop cam
BUT...
35mm 1.0 lens projecting onto a crop sensor = same image and same photons that a 50mm 1.2 lens projects onto a full frame camera

Provided the sensors have the same sensitivity per square inch, the performance should be the same.

Of course...
1. Some sensors pixel skip, affecting their sensitivity per square inch in video mode
2. Some good sensors are only available in cropped cams (eg Blackmagic)

So yeah... lots of real world testing be needed!

Absolutely.

The gain is that using a FF lens on a smaller sensor has thrown photons away - worse - left them bouncing around inside your lens creating flare

I can't follow the photon malarkey, don't have the cells for it but in layman's terms Full Frame and APS-C lenses, such as my new Nikon mounts Samyang Cines are going to have a wider field of view, transmit more light than their rated T1.5 and gain a little image quality boost, not to mention using more of the lens too which has its own type of look.

Tokina 8-11 F2.0! Or Tamron 12-35 F2.0 for around £250!

NO NO NO. NOT A THIRD THREAD!!!!!

STRIKE THAT! FOUR THREADS!

Can a Mod Please combine these three threads? My brain is hurting from having to read 3 4 threads!

Thread #1: Metabones Speed Booster, makes Nikon and Canon lenses wider and faster!!!!!
Thread #2: Metabones Speed Booster - Faster, Sharper, Wider lenses on APS-C and below...
Thread #3: New Metabones adapter coming for EOS=>M4/3 that makes the lens faster!
Thread #4: Metabones Speed Booster

Or maybe a whole new www.metabonesUser.com forum?

(Sorry for the cross posting of this in all three FOUR threads. That sort of happens when there are three FOUR threads on the same topic.)

Well, it's true that there should probably be a forum for all things adapter, but since there isn't, I need to ask...

Has anyone actually heard of definite plans to produce an MFT mount Speed Booster? (I know Phillip Bloom supposedly aluded to it somewhere, but that's hardly a press release) - Or is this just another AF wish list?

Actually Mac, metabones them selves confirmed it in there own white paper about the technology (I'm sure that was on PBlooms article?)

Give it a read, they outline the road map and show examples on m43 cameras, the difference in sharpness is amazing
