Hi,

I have to buy a metabones PL to e-mount adapter but I wonder whish is the best for my FS7. I want to use it with Sony Cine lenses (first one : 35-50-85mm).

I found two references, do you know the differences ?

- Metabones PL to E-mount Adapter : ref : MBPL-E-BM1
- Metabones PL to Sony E-mount T Adapter (Black Matt) : ref : MB_PL-E-BT1

Thanks very much

I thought I read a few days ago that the adapter had been discontinued, but I see it's still listed on the Metabonse website. And Metabones says it has been tested with the FS7. They say it's for use with primes. I assume that means the adapter isn't strong enough to hold a zoom, unless you're using additional support for the lens or adapter. Elsewhere on this forum, posters have said that the Sony CineAlta primes are very high quality, but heavier than most primes. I see that the Wooden Camera PL adapter has a unique way of adding support for their adapter, by connecting their adapter to their optional cheese plate that attaches to the top of the FS7. Seems like a good idea, but costs a bit more. Also, regarding the CineAlta lenses, it looks like you're forced to buy either all 6 lenses, or a specific sub-set (20, 25, 135); I don't understand the logic there. But at least the price for all six is quite reasonable.

P.S. -- maybe the "T" in "MB_PL-E-BT1" stands for "Tripod foot", which that model has.

Thanks,

I think the old set of lenses (SCL-P35T20/SCL-P50T20/SCL-P85T20) is lighter than the second (SCL PK6).

The old set :
35mm T2.0 = 1.46kg
50mm T2.0 = 1.25kg
85mm T2.0 = 1.24kg

The new set :
35mm T2.0 = 2.1kg
50mm T2.0 = 2.0kg
85mm T2.0 = 2.4kg

So I think I will use the old set without support.

As a quick note the old set were near universally panned with lots of plastic parts and shoddy build quality. the 2nd versions are a completely different proposition

The T on all Metabones adapters means extra matte black coating inside the adapter to reduce flaring. If its available, I would suggest the T version. As for support, I have the Metabones 15mm Rod Support system that slides into the tripod plate of the PL to E mount adapter and have used it before with heavy lenses. Let me know if you are interested, I don't use mine anymore and wouldn't mind selling it.

I'd assume that the unusual specific sub set of 20/25/135 does make complete total sense to buy if you already have the original set of the 35/50/85 (except, I wonder if the differences from v1 to v2 might be an issue in mixing them together).

Since you are smart and using PL glass, there is no reason to skimp on the mount. You get what you pay for in mounts and I would not go with a cheap one.

One company I will not mention has the mount I sent back in Feb and still has not contacted me or returned my mount.

I have tried them all on my FS7 since I use two PL lens. The only one that has worked well and I kept was the MTF PL to Sony E mount adapter, MTPLSEM. Locks great, does not loosen up as all the others did. And is a very fair price.

Hi Paul,

Do you have tested the Metabones PL to Sony E-mount T Adapter ? I have finally ordered this one before your message.

The first one (not T) doesn't seem to be compatible with the FS7. For the "T" model, the FS7 is in the compatible list so I would like to know if it works well or not.

Duol,

I will just giving my overview with the mounts and the one I found to be the best by far. Hope it all works out well for you.

I don't have a FS7 but I will be buying that adapter for a FS700 I have. It says on the listing that it fits the FS7 so you could always contact them from the website below.

The problem with the Wooden Camera mount is it will only really work on the FS7, so when you upgrade to your next camera you will have to buy a new version or a new support. Remember you then have to buy the Wooden Camera FS7 top plate to mount the adapter. Not a fan of Wooden Camera, it is a shame Element Technica have not designed any products for the FS7.

You peaked my curiosity. Why are you "not a fan" of Wooden Camera?

Seems like their products are first rate in build quality. Although, I gotta admit, the wood touches on some products are annoying to me. I ditched the WC rod end with the wood insert.

I'm a big fan of Element Technica. I have a F3, F5 and a FS700 all loaded with Element Technica plates, handles and risers. I feel the first generation of Wooden Camera borrowed a lot of the designs of Element Technica. The new generation of Wooden Camera has it's own style but it just doesn't work for me as it looks like Lego. I have to applaud Wooden Camera as they are churning this stuff out now. Element Technica barley release anything new these days which is disappointing because they design really useful products that really enhance the cameras that I use. I don't like Zacuto either which feels like it's aimed at Canon DSLR shooters with it's red theme. ARRI make some nice stuff but I prefer Element Technica for some reason. So it's more aesthetics than usefulness which is quite sad when I think about it.
