Message to Jarred

Jarred,

I would like you to strongly consider allowing guests read-only access to this board. There have been some questionable posts here recently from guests and I think it would be in line with what many other boards do. I also think it would control the amount of outbursts that occur occasionally.

This is open for discussion, so if anyone else feels this is a good idea, please chime in.

:D

Re: Message to Jarred

I dunno...I think there are a lot of people who come here to ask a quick question and then get sucked into joining. A few knuckleheads pop up here and there, but largely this community is mature enough to deal with them appropriately.

I can't honestly say that being granted read-only access would have deterred me from joining, but it certainly set up a welcoming tone to find that any guest could post a question and have it answered.

Just my opinion, obviously.

Re: Message to Jarred

i think thats a good idea. i have always liked the way dvinfo.net works. no guest postings, and they really push to have poelple sign up with their real names.

Re: Message to Jarred

..i kind of like that guests can post, so we can help people passing through. its sort of going above and beyond  to help others out.. sometimes they help us out with some nice info, or directions as well. but at the same time i too am annoyed by people making passing remarks from behind the "guest" smokescreen.  like j_barnes said, its nothing we cant handle,..  but it is annoying.     i think that the mods should just feel free to delete any negative or questionable post from guests. IMHO ..as an anonymous guest they have no real rights here as a member of the contributing community, and to post little stink bombs anonymously is just disrespectful to the board and its members.

..i dont know.. i guess im content with the way it is.. periodically annoyed, but content ;) if gues posting was to go bye bye i wouldnt mind at all though.

i am the masta! beeaaatch!

j/k

yeah, chris done good over there. maybe having real names and no guest posting would dissuade some, but if your really into it then take the 5 minutes to sign up. doesnt seem to have hurt the dvinfo.net folks much.

Re: Message to Jarred

I dont mind them, I do on the other hand feel that a very small zone of private posts would be something to consider, I sometimes hesitate writing stuff that would be there for the mass to read, but a decent relationship with most of you guys can easily call for some more personal posting at times . . . its not a snobbish thing, but I just feel that you can see members that prove thier loyalty to not only just a regular forum but to more than that!

Re: Message to Jarred

It would be nice to PM a guest and let them know that what they are saying is inappropriate or perhaps clarify a misconception privately. It's not possible to do that with a guest...

Re: Message to Jarred

Guys, I'm open to your opinions, but could anyone perhaps post a link to an incident that might illustrate the type of inappropriate behavior you speak of?

Maybe I'm just an ascerbic kinda guy, but the newbies who ask for tutorials about subjects beyond their abilities really irk me more then any inapropriate postings. I can't really remember anyone being inflamatory or insensative other then that guy who was trolling the XL2 section for a while, so a link might help me understand your point of view.

Re: Message to Jarred

Woah...wait a second guys. We can't disallow guests from posting! If we do, we'll probably have another crack at the "what's that clicking" question!

Re: Message to Jarred

Just to clarify where I'm coming from. Most of the posts in the above example were already deleted so you really can't tell what's going on without that context. This post was just the catalyst for me to bring this up, not the reason, and it happened to be directed at me but I was more surprised by the guest's reaction than rattled by it. It was the inappropriate outburst of rage that insulted both me and other users that resulted from a playful post in the first place. I think users would be more resistent to these outbursts if they weren't anonymous....

I really don't care one way or the other. If there is no strong support for the idea, I'm fine with that.

Re: Message to Jarred

As in life, your always going to get a few yuckos out there. It's not hard to deal with them, and I think it would deter some from making those quick responces that help out a confused thread.

And if someone has their heart set on being rude, they could just join, post it, and never use that log in again.

At the same time, it's not really that big of a deal, and their are upsides, so if guest posting were to leave, it wouldn't effect me.

Come on guys, that's classic! I laughed out loud! I agree that it's annoying, but I think we deal with these people in the prescribed and appropriate manor. In that sited post, the offending remark was stricken from the record, the person came back and apologized and was welcomed with the communal open arms of a truely helpful body of people. Someone says "Sorry", someone else says "s'okay, here's a beer" and life goes on.

I argue that the post cited illustrates why this forum works, and occasionally we get a bit of excitement or humor out of the deal.

That being said, I fully submit to the wishes of the whole over the wishes of the few in this case.

Yeah, I had to do a double take on that one...   :D

By the way, that's not true, my wife tells me where to go if I'm being ridiculous.
