Merlin Sleight of Hand...

I bought the Merlin w/Arm and Vest combo.

Right now, I use it w/a DVX100a, the DVXUser 5 hour battery, and an on camera mounted Sennheiser MKH-416. I think I'm really pushing it on the 7.5 pound limit:

1 start/1 mid on the middle
1 start/6 mids/1 end on the bottom

The HVX is supposed to be extra pound heavier than the DVX, so make sure you accessorize it with things you are sure you will need.

It works great so far, and you'll never have a more happy day when you finally get used to balancing to a new configuration on your own, with no "CookBook" settings.

I really want to get a pilot. I cannot afford a Flyer for the time being, but a Pilot I can. Very cool stuff there. I just have to lighten my setup enough to miss the 10 pound max mark.

Give Tiffen some time and give them credit for the quality of what they make not something petty like a tripod plate.

I don't care if they're selling you a camera that wins oscars for $20, if they tell you something is going to be in the package and it isn't, then tell you that it's because they haven't updated their pamphlets and that you still need to spend extra to get what they promised you, that is sh*t business and you shouldn't work with them. Are they giving you good stuff? Sure. Does that make false advertising okay? No. It's the principle that matters. If they're not willing to live up to their advertisements, then they don't deserve your business, no matter how good the product is. Stop cheerleading for someone that has no problem screwing their customers.

There's a lot of animosity here. No need for it really. I want to see the unboxing pictures from those who recently purchased the system.

wait... the steadicam site now lists a free tripod plate offer (http://www.tiffen.com/merlin_tripod_plate_offer.html) - anyone know anything about this? i didn't have a promotional card in my carton when i bought the merlin 2 months ago. so first they pull the plate out of the box, then folks complain, then they correct the mistake by making a 'promo offer' to new customers but not the ones who got screwed..?

what do folks know about this? my merlin is in storage at the moment but when i get a chance to inspect everything again i'm definitely gonna get on the phone with tiffen.

Ohhhh man, that was a strategic error.
My guess is that if you get in touch with someone at Tiffen, they'll find a way to get you the plate for the cost of shipping. They just didn't want to put that on the page since that would be admitting that they messed up.
