Yes, all the small rigs have this problem.

With an XL1 sized camera you can use a *thin* video cable (like an flexible RCA cable). But to use a firewire cable you would need a much bigger rig.

I presume you are refing to a smooth shooter? That woudl handle a very thin cable. But for firewire cables (beacuse of their stiffness) I'm talking a big rig.

Okay, I'm going to pick up an HVX200, some P2 cards, and a SC Flyer...but along the way I need to stop and rob a bank.
 
It could be hard to find a better combination than that. :)

..though prehaps with a lottery win in place of a bank robbery :thumbsup: :grin:

Yeah, but I don't have time to scratch lottery tickets. With a bank, the money's there waiting for me.

Anyway, Garrett thinks the FW can be done. Here's what he said:

if you can acquire a light, flexible cable (apple makes some) loop it down from the side of the camera and tuck a loop under your 'gimbal holding' hand... make it long enough so it doesn't influence the camera angle
 
Oh it *can* be done, but I think I'm going to disagree with Garrett a litte (!!!) and still question whether it would work well.

My sugestion: Try it! :)
