Merlin + HVX help

I'm not sure whether I've got my HVX balanced on the Merlin. It seems balanced until I start to walk, then it seesaws back, forth, and every other way.

Is this normal? As I watched the DVD tutorial, all the cameras were shown sitting rock solid. I've been practicing on and off for the last six hours or so and getting pretty frustrated.

And yes, I did a search, and read every relevant thread at least five times. I also followed all the cookbook settings, and I also placed three washers between the last three weights at the bottom, as suggested by some on this board.

Can any Merlin experts chime in? I'm using a stock HVX with stock battery. Thanks in advance!

Hi Matt

Havent used the Merlin in awhile but I think I got a pretty good handle on it.

There are two points I want to throw out.

1. Merlin does take a little time to master Id say 4 weeks - but when you do its well worth the effort.

2. The merlin requires precision balance. So a slighty off setting will cause issues. Dont worry as once you get it right, well youve got it right. Start with small adjustments, like removing one washer, two then three etc. The cookbook settings account for most but not the for and aft adjustments, so adjust the trim at small levels. But, if you are only see sawing back and forth Id say youve almost got it. Id recommend hanging it up for the day and approach it again with fresh arms.

How was your one second test?

Thanks for the tips Noel.

I believe I got about a one second drop time from the 90 degree angle. Except what worries me is that the camera doesn't pop upright at 90 degrees. More like at a 45 degree angle.

I'm getting nervous about this $800 purchase. I knew it would be a challenge to balance the HVX on it, but didn't think it would be this hard.

It just takes practice and like mentioned above the balance has to be perfect, but it is possible, i have been using the hvx and merlin for a number of different projects over the past 5/6 months and it was a purchase i definately dont regret, just hang in there and it will reward you
