Merlin for roller derby?

I am looking at buying the Steadicam Merlin to film/capture/video (what do call what we do now?) roller derby bouts and bmx races. Any advice on if the Merlin is good for such wild movement s and where to buy? I have the DVX100b and a shotgun mic, nothing more to carry.

I would say, no, the merlin would not be good in this case. The merlin is great, but it's VERY delicate, as far as the balancing goes. It's almost impossible to use outdoors if there is even the slightest bit of wind, cause it throws it off balance. It's also difficult to get the "turns" down... I've had mine for about two months now, and love it, but it has to be under particular conditions i.e. indoors preferably.

i could take my glidecam 2000 pro on anything and geta stable shot. even a bumpy bus ride.

Hmm.. can you explain a little more what you want to do?

Do you want the rig to ride along on a vehical? Or is this somthing that you'll be on foot running around shooting the subjects as they roll/ride?

I would be on foot following the bikes and even running some of the jumps. For the Roller Derby I would be following the girls in a circle as best as I could and getting into the action as close as possible. Gotta get the low shots since they all wear such short skirts!

Oh yeah, Merlin will work great then.

Just keep the movements of the rig itself under 1.5G if fully loaded. - But your arms will absorb the bigger shocks anyway. Just don't jerk it about super aggressivly.

Merlin goes lower than GC too  :love4:
