Menu buttons in Encore CS5.5

I am now switching over to Encore for my DVD authoring, but am having a lot of problems in doing so. I am trying to just build a menu and add buttons for scene selections. So far as I can tell, I should be able to drag and drop menu buttons from the Library onto my menu, resize, etc and go to town. That is what I get from watching a couple online demos and from a training video put out by Class On Demand that I got at NAB last year.
Apparently that is not right. When I try and do that I get a small, 1/8" x 1/8" box that looks nothing like the button I am trying to load onto my menu. Also it will not allow me to resize it, and I cannot have more than one "button".
What am I doing wrong? All I want to do is add some buttons to my menu.
Are there any good resources out there for Encore that might better explain these basic procedures?

All you need to do is double click on a button and it will appear in the menu.
Make sure you do not mix SD buttons in a HD menu.

One of Encore's quirks is that it tends to create buttons right on top of other buttons. So if you create a duplicate button, it looks like it didn't do anything. You have to drag and drop the top button to see that there's one underneath. Yeah, I find that irritating too.

Ann Bens, as usual, hits it exactly too. Especially about mixing SD and HD -- a big no-no.

Finally, I've found that the best source of information about Encore, is the Adobe PDF "Adobe Encore: Help and Tutorials". You can find it and download it to your desktop by opening Encore and hitting F1 key to open the help system. I don't remember the exact location, but that's how I found it. It's a little arcane, but the information is actually in there -- if you're persistent.

And buttons, they are a pain in Encore. So don't get discouraged. We all go through this.

Wow, thanks for all the replys!
Jim, I am trying to drag buttons from the Libraryt section into the Menu screen.

When I double-click a button, I get that 1/8" x 1/8" square that I cannot work with.

Ann, my project is standard def. I am looking at buttons under the button library under "Technology", and trying to select "Organic Video Button". Cannot tell if it's SD or HD button, I assume SD, otherwise it would note that its HD....right?. How would I tell that?

Bruce thanks for the info on where to locate more info on Encore, I will print that out now.

Just noticed that after I add a button to my menu, and enlarge the menu screen to 100%, I can see that whatever button I import is just a small green narrow outline of a box. Nothing in that box at all. Nothing resembling the button I just selected. What's going on with that? It happens whether I drag and drop the buton, or just double-click it.
I must be doing something wrong at a very basic level.

How can I tell?

The menu that is being built is a .psd file of the poster used to advertise the play that the DVD is for.

The actual file imported into Encore is HD, but upon exporting to Encore I told Encore on the first page when I set up the file, it was an SD project.

I don't see a way to tell if the buttons I am looking at are SD or HD, nor do I see a way to select one or the other. I am looking in the Library for buttons, under Technology, trying to use the "Organic Video Button."

I am really in the dark on this program, but trying to learn. Don't want to revert back to Roxio.

I know there is likely a very simple way to tell and make the change, it's just that I cannot see what it is.

How can I tell if the buttons I am looking at are HD or SD, and how do I change from one to the other?
