GH3 Memory card full on a 64GB card when there was space free

I wonder if this could be a bug it caught me out tonight, the GH3 was reporting the memory card as full, I'd formatted it beforehand and recorded about 35 mins at the 50Mb/s, I expected I'd get around an hour, but no. Anyway I assumed the camera was telling the truth, but got home put the card in a reader and found the card was half empty. :Drogar-Angry(DBG):

Given I can record almost three hours of 25 Mbs AVCHD onto a 32 GB card, I would expect almost three hours of 50 Mbs footage to fit onto a 64 GB card. With that as a starting point, 35 minutes of footage would be a lot less than half the card - closer to 1/5. So given your thread title & the info you supply, something does indeed appear to be wrong.

Sandisk 64GB 95MB/s. I did wonder if I'd forgotten to format it, but I tried to scroll through my footage and it wouldn't show the clips, it said something along the lines of 'This picture cannot be played', so I turned it on and off. Then the clips were showing and there was no other video or photos other than that I'd taken this evening. With hindsight I should have tried recording at that point to see if the problem had gone away.

Well an hour was a conservative estimate, I was just startled at 35 mins.

I should add a correction I checked the video files and I was on 72Mbps ALL-INTRA (recording as MOV files). I've switched it now to 50p and I'll have to see if the problem occurs again.

How full was the card before you re-formated? It seems like it didn't re-format over what might have been on there but deleted the file structure only. Kind of like when you drag things to the trash but don't dump it before ejecting a drive. Who knows I'm just speculating but I have never had something like this happen with a Sandisk card.

It was definately reformatted, I did it in the camera, it was 100% full beforehand, so I don't know why I even thought of looking for existing photos being on it as I wouldn't have been able to record anything had I not formatted it.

It's ironic I had a GH2 with me running on the same type of card (so I had a second angle) and that didn't let me down, I'd flashed the latest Flowmotion on it as per the advice of others on here, it's not crashed yet, but give it time LOL.

We'll see but I think there's a firmware bug lurking in the GH3.

Did you try recording beyond when the display says the card is full or was the card actually full as in it stopped recording because there was no room? I know with some patches on my GH2 it would list far less recording time than it actually had as I was using a variable codec on some low detail scenes.

This is interesting. Never came across it on my GH3 but haven't recorded a ton of stuff yet. Maybe 16GB of footage total.

I tried starting a recording and got the message, my first thought was I could delete the last few takes (and whilst at it makes sure the card definately had no old video on it) but it wouldn't show me the images to play them back, so then I turned off and on but I didn't bother trying to record again, it was only when I checked the card on my PC that I spotted it was over half empty.

The card never did this in my GH2 before so I don't think it's a issue with the SD.

Weird. Well I bed as more of us use our GH3s over the next months if it is a bug it will show up. Hopefully it is just a freak occurance.

I put a fully charged battery into my GH3, along with a SanDisk 64GB SDXC UHS-I 95MB/sec card, opened up the LCD to simulate how I would use the camera, set the camera to record 1080 24P MOV 50Mbits, and pressed record...

3+ hours later the card was full, and the battery was almost dead. ( one battery segment still showed on the screen )

I checked the memory card and there were 59.1 GB of files in 15 files.

Checking the MOV files, they varied in duration from 10 - 18 minutes in length.

It's hard to estimate the actual recording time because of the variable duration of the 4GB MOV file segments, but I would guess it's easily 3+ hours.

So no problem with my GH3 to use the full 64GB SanDisk card.

...What's interesting to me is the variable duration of the 4GB file segments, as it's obvious that the duration of each segment will depend on the visual complexity of what you are shooting.

I am going to have to try shooting a "stress" test ( very complex random image source ) to see what the shortest duration a 4GB file segment can be, which in turn will tell me what's the shortest amount of time a 64GB card will last.

The good news for me with my test, is that is shows that the GH3 can last for 3+ hours on 1 battery, which is double what my GH2 does. So it's possible to shoot all day on just 3 batteries. Very cool.

Each clip I'd filmed although in one shoot, was broken down into about 4 minute clips, as I tend to stop the recording between tracks to make it easier to edit them individually. Your battery check is interesting, I had a spare on me in case, but it's nice to know a single battery will manage over 3 hours.

I was shooting car races the other day w/ GH3 on San Disk 95 mb write speed card. I was doing alot of burst stills then video clips. I was using a combination of a All-Intra option and 1080 60p MOV. I was going to show a clip I just took to someone when I noticed that upon playback on the thumbnail view only 40 of say 300 images (vid clips) were available to view. The rest had an X and would say Cannot View or Invalid. I thought I might not be able to retrieve the footage so I switched cards and had no problem the rest of the day. Fortunately I did not lose the footage. When I reinserted the previous card it was displaying okay. After reading this thread I am convinced we have a GH3 BUG!

That's the one.! ... I think off the top of my head it said 'This picture cannot be played' but it wouldn't play until I did a power off. So it was refusal to play clips, at same time the camera claiming the card was full.
