Media Tool won't load

Trying to use Avid to convert the HVX res chart, and it's started giving me an unpleasant message: Unable to open file "Media Tool"; when I hit "more" it says "File does not contain a valid Avid domain header."

Running version 5.2.1 on WinXP MCE.

It used to work; I don't think I did anything to break it. I tried a complete uninstall/reinstall but to no improvement, except it also said that it couldn't register the MXF file type -- that seems like a bad sign!

Any ideas?

Barry, this may sound like a stupid question, but was the MXF file in the directory?:
\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1

Yep. But it doesn't even matter. I can run Avid, start a new project, tell it to open the media tool, and bam -- error. It just doesn't work anymore.

I deleted everything out of that directory, and it makes no difference. It's like something got corrupted and I don't know how to fix it. Right now Avid is not making me all that happy.

Could be a permissions issue. Make sure the folder isn't read only or something strange like that.

EDIT: Actually now that I re-read the thread I'd say it's definitely a permission issue. Avid and Windows Media Center Edition are not good friends. It's XP Pro only I'm afraid.

Tried again. Uninstalled Xpress Pro HD, uninstalled Avid DIO. Rebooted. Reinstalled fresh from scratch.

It brings up an error box which says "Registry Key: software\classes\.mxf could not be set."

And that's it. That's the only error given, other than that the media tool doesn't load.

Can I RegEdit something in there to fix this?

Well, don't do anything drastic on my word alone, but I've seen all kinds of weird things happen with Avid on OS's other than XP Pro. Maybe someone else will jump in with another suggestion, but mine would be to change operating systems.

Good luck.

I dont think media center is on the list of supported OS - i could be wrong but i remember hearing that

I answered this yesterday and my mail got rejected! Must be some server errors... But no, home media center edition is not supported for Avid products as is Windows XP Home edition. So it is really hard to troubleshoot a problem when he infrastructure is not correct.

One thing to try is making sure you are logged in as administrator, not as a user who as administrative rights. That may have something to do with it.

For camera format support, see:

Michael,
Should everything done in Avid be done under the Administrator account? What's the difference between that and a user account with admin rights? Sorry if it's a silly question. I'm just a bit confused.
Thanks,
Mike

I don't know but I hear there some differences in how things operate at the OS level. I need to ask some engineer types specifically what that might be.

Any user in the admin group has identical credentials to the administrator account - the admin account is essentially a user in the admin group and can be removed from there.
