media offline issue

I work at a news station and we have a few avids. I'm in promotions but today one of the news editors was using their avid when they found that most of their media files were offline, as if they just vanished. The timeline is there, all bins are there, and transition effects...but no media. There is what should be media in the bins but when you click on them they just say they're offline. Now deleting media isn't something you can just accidentally do on an avid but I also doubt anyone here would be that much of a d*ck to delete the media for no reason. No one's come forward and we're all scratching our heads figuring out how to get the media back. They didn't log their tapes like they should've so thats out..and when I click on their storage drive it's only like 40 gigs filled and they had a decent amount of projects.

Has something like this ever happened where avid just loses files or do you think the news room is haunted?...or is it a human error.

Thanks

Someone deleted the media.

What I'm guessing happened is that someone was in ProjectA and opened a bin from ProjectB, and someone else (or the same person, not knowing what they were doing) deleted ProjectB. Go back to ProjectA and all the media that was "borrowed" from ProjectB is now offline.

Recapture is your only option at this point, if the actual media files are gone. And if says you're only using 40GB of your media drives--I'm guessing it's gone.

Michael.
