Media error (sandisk + mxr extreme)

EDIT: It turned out that it was the mxr adapter instead. I now got what I need. I don't mean any harm. You may even ask the mods to remove this thread if you feel so. I'm not going to edit any of my posts tho'. More info in my 3rd post: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...mxr-extreme)&p=2533000&viewfull=1#post2533000

I bought a sandisk extreme pro sdhc uhs 1 card 2 weeks ago. I was using it with a mxr extreme adepter. I had no problems first week. Today I was testing some picture profiles and recently began experiencing media errors. When that happens, recording stops and there's no green or red lights on the slot. I need to reinsert the card. Camera's built in card format setting doesn't solve the issue, it keeps giving up this error anyway when I start shooting again. It's sometimes 15 secs into the recording, sometimes 1 minute.

I also tried windows formatting (both quick and normal, with the sd card formatter tool). I ran a check disk. No help.

This is really sad news to me. Camera was brand new, and I was planning to do some shooting with it outdoors. That's why I bought this adepter and card. Before that I was using my 80gb hdd with an adepter, which as it was mentioned in this thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?240596-SxS-and-EX1R-the-ultimate-way-to-save . By the way it's really annoying when I can shoot in S&Q mode 10 minutes on an old hdd, and a brand new card gives me this kind of error.

This is the card I have: http://www.sandisk.com/products/camcorder/sandisk-extreme-pro-sdhcsdxc-uhs-i-memory-cards (I have the 32 gb version)
I bought it from here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/SANDISK-EXT...&otn=2&po=LVI&ps=63&clkid=5788000399496308575

MxR adepter was ordered from the official site.

I don't really know what I should do at this point. Is there any way to fix that sd card? Should I get a new one? Could someone suggest me a card that doesn't seem to have any problems? Any info is appreciated.

You're trusting a card from ebay? I wouldn't be surprised at all if the card is not really a Sandisk at all. Counterfeit cards are everywhere and I wouldn't buy a card from any retailer I didn't already know and trust.
You're already cutting corners by not using SxS cards. I think it unwise to cut corners further by buying cards from unknown sources.

Yeah, it has been estimated that something like 20-40% of Sandisk cards at least sold on eBay are counterfeit. Don't get them there! Its not worth the loose change you save.

Many manufactures will have varying quality from batch to batch of their cards. Transcend was a favorite for a long time and then began having bad batches. Certainly a counterfeit is a real possibility. 32gb cards are particularly susceptible to media errors. I just got a Sony 32 gb for the same price and works fine. Most of my cards are 16gb Transcend. I've found a number of brands to stay away from. I wouldn't use a 32gb card unless you absolutely had to for some reason. And if it's real important, than no question, use a Sony SxS card and don't take a chance.

I had this problem with a hoodman adapter - bit the bullet and bought the Sony adapter and have had no problems since. Currently using it in conjunction with a 16gig Sandisk and a 32gig RAW steel card, no dropped frames or anything.

I've heard that Sandisk (and other SDHC manufacturers change the specs on their cards from time to time, that may be part of your problem.

A lot of confusing information here, ex1r777

–Does display info gives you any clue?

First, I would try to eliminate bad apple: just to make sure it is the card and not the mxr adapter, I would use another card to compare situation. If everything goes fine with another card and with the card in question problem persists, I would try to "un–format" it – either format it in HFS, or delete partition under Windows without creating any new partition, and than re–format it in camera. If that not helping – than you're definitely dealing with defective media.
You were mentioned this thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?240596-SxS-and-EX1R-the-ultimate-way-to-save . So, what happened? What made you go back to card+adapter combination?..

Just passing this along about CF Cards...

"Received this, this morning from my sales rep:

Quote: Nanoflash has recently taken off SanDisk Extreme and SanDisk ExtremePro cards from their recommendation list.
This is due to recent internal changes SanDisk has been making to their CF cards, which has since caused multiple errors to occur in the field."

Updated NanoFlash approval chart can be found here:

I don't use anything buy Sony SXS cards in my camera but...I know others here go for the other option.

I am very happy for you, even envious (a little). And I wish your financial competence always allow you to spend plenty $$$ on media.
I am sure – if Sony initially prices their SxS reasonable, or re-evaluate their attitude humanely, or even if these other guys (like from 16x9Inc) would compete on SxS lowering the price... – non of us would even think of any alternative solutions. Instead, they keep up. The only positive outcome of their corporate greed – they made us quite inventive.

Seems to me it's not just Sony that has pricy cards. Panasonic P2 cards aren't cheap either.

It seems to me if one buys a higher level product...like a high end sports car...you don't turn around and try and run it on the cheapest gas avaialble, then be surprised when you have problems.

Same goes for cameras. It's not corporate greed from where I sit. I even have to smile a bit when I compare the price of doing business now, buying cameras and media to record on ten or fifteen years ago to today. My Sony Betacam 400A, when it was new, was just over thirty grand when you add in the price of the lens. Then the cost of beta tapes! Today with my EX3, the camera price point is tens of thousands of dollars lower and the media it records to holds hours of material compared to 20 or thirty minutes per tape. Then an edit system to put all those images together...that price tag would make anyone gag compared to a top of the line MacBook Pro with FCP today.

Ok, let's charge Ferrari owners, like $15 per galon. According to your approach this would be fare enough. ( But EX1R is not a ferrari of videocameras of today. Acura, as most.:) )

That only means you're sitting well.:)

Yep, and Plumbicons, and studio cameras of 60-s… – all nostalgic passages like this are very sweet, indeed.
But now, in the middle of February of 2012, WHAT ON EARTH can justify $ 1 900 + for 64GB of flash memory?? Anything?.. Other, than greed?..

Sure, there are good flash memory, and there are bad flash memory, and plenty between. But until you and people like you are ready to pay almost two grands for 64GB – they ( Sony, Pana, etc) will charge ALL of us and have 1000% mark–up..
Besides, nothing – even top SxS – can GUARANTEE error–free operation. Should Sony really concern about error–free operation, they would enable simultaneous recording on both slots. But they didn't..

Hello again. First of all sorry for disappearing for weeks after that post. I was really busy and totally forgot about this. I apologize :(

Second: I'm now using an MxM adapter with ATP promax 32gb sdhc card. I've overcranked the card to the fullest 2 times, shooting a traffic scene, and some regular recordings aswell. No problems so far. Hopefully I won't experience the same issue again. Btw this might sound as if I came here just to bash sandisk (or the mxr adapter) but that's really not my intention (It might have looked so, since I only have 1 post :)) All I needed was some help from someone out there that might have experienced this and had a solution on the matter.

These are the cards I have now: http://postimage.org/image/fqmwzos4f/

Edit: I didn't mix them to see what exactly caused the problem. I don't want to take any risks.

I've contacted sandisk right after making this thread. They said that the card was genuine. This was their last answer on that matter:

Thank you very much for the provided information and photographs. I am glad to inform you that you have purchased an authentic SanDisk card.

However, our online Product Compatibility Tool (http://pct1.sandisk.com/NewSearch.aspx) shows that we have not tested any SanDisk cards with the specific Sony Camcorder. We would like to point out that it is our goal to ensure our cards will work with any specific device; when SanDisk cards have not yet been tested by us, we advise the customers to contact the device manufacturer to determine whether the device is compatible with this particular SanDisk memory card.

Since the particular card has not been tested with your Sony EX1R camcorder and due to the fact that you are using an MxR adapter, we cannot be certain what is causing the issue. From now on and for your convenience we would advise you to consult the Product Compatibility Tool prior purchasing a SanDisk product.

etc...

They didn't offer a replacement or anything at all regarding warranty.

I have an ex1r/2. There wasn't any media inside the box to record onto. It's like buying a car without wheels. Sony makes its own adapter right? If they had been really that short on sxs cards back then, they could have at least put a memory card and adapter inside the box. I was really upset about this. SxS cards are way too much expensive over here. I don't shoot weddings or events or any important stuff like that. I got this cam for personal stuff. Spending this much money for media doesn't sound right to me, at least at this level of mine. When I got the camera, all I had was an old hdd to record onto. It's not very handy to carry the cam around with an hdd attached to it, you know. That's why I needed a proper card.

By the way in case you'd like to see what kind of stuff I'm shooting, so far I have 2 videos over here: http://www.youtube.com/user/ozhayaller?feature=mhee (the language is turkish). I'm new to shooting, editing and stuff like that. Looking at those videos you may say that ex1r was overkill for me, but I got this cam for its versatility, which I'm sure it will help me on future projects (That shot transition feature and the ecs mode of shutter speed are pretty handy)

Anyway. Thanks for all the replies and help. I wish happy shootings to you all :)

I have the MXR Adapter and had few problems. Good to hear about the Sony Adapter. I have about 20 16gb cards. The best seem to be the Transcend...even the class 6. Worst is Patriot class 10.

Please find here information about how to test your card (reliability + counterfeit test).
Counterfeit cards can work well at the beginning (first GBs are functional) but then they plain fail to record anything, but they do so silently. You don't notice until it's too late.

Frankly...that's not greed on their part. That's someone paying way too much when, with a little effort, they could find the same quality product much cheaper. I can get 64 gig Sony cards for less than a grand.
Not sure where you really live or who your dealer is but I'd suggest you shop around in the future. ;)

I mixed the cards and adapters today and it turned out that it is the mxr adapter instead. I tried sandisk + mxm first, did some overcranking and it completed without any errors. Next was atp + mxr and interesting enough, there was no light on the slot? Reinserting, trying the other slot; nothing. Camera doesn't see the card. Sandisk + MxR lights up but gives media errors again.

To sum it up:
atp promax + mxm = working
sandisk + mxm = working
sandisk + mxr = media errors
atp promax + mxr = no lights on slot

I recorded it in case you'd like to check it out:

Video is unlisted. I mean no harm to anyone.

Lensmith, please get back to earth.
To me, B&H was always a good dealer. They have SBP-64A 64GB SxS PRO Memory Card (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/825265-REG/Sony_SBP64A_SBP_64A_64GB_SxS_PRO.html) for 1,995.99.
If you're arguing just for the sake of arguing – and that how it look so far – PM me and keep this thread clean, as senior member should.

LOL Nope, not arguing for the sake of arguing. Making a point.

Same web site, same company. Sony SXS 64gig card for $679. Well below your $1,995.99 price.

They work great. I use them. A lot. ;)

Just a note... I would never do overcranking or undercranking on anything but a Sony SxS card. Those processes ask a lot of the the writing ability of the sdhc card and the adapter.
Also, be sure the slot led light is green before you hit the record button. Many errors are caused when you hit the record button too soon while the camera is still writing data to the card from the last take (the light is red).
