Media Composer/Symphony v4.0 announced

Just learned a few more things--monitor 16 tracks of audio in realtime. Video satellite (for ProTools) now works on a Mac and PC. Upgrade pricing hasn't been announced but it's supposed to be nice and reasonable.

NICE! Now, please please please tell me they finally support automated pulldown removal from 1080/24pA footage on a 1080/24p timeline...

That I don't know. I'm just pulling info from the Avid forums and press releases as I get it. I'll see if I can find an answer to that.

The dongle is gone and from what I understand will stay gone. If you have pre-3.5 and upgrade you can choose to keep your dongle (if you upgrade to 3.5). The debate on the Avid forums ended with an Avid rep (Marianna or Todd, I believe) saying you can keep the dongle with v4.0 if you have a support contract. With no support contract it's software activation only. That's the direction Avid is taking it and it doesn't look like that will change.

Just saw a post on the Avid forums--it appears that if you have a dongle now you can use the dongle on 4.0. If you buy 4.0 outright there is no dongle option. No mention of whether support contracts are necessary to keep the dongle, though.

This feature is going to be really nice, awesome for Avid to do this:

Final Cut Pro (FCP) workflow support: Offers check-in and check-out of FCP media with project links as well as media and metadata conversion of FCP-to-Avid and Avid-to-FCP projects - providing customers with more platform flexibility.

That's for their Interplay product, not Media Composer. It will be very useful for broadcast companies that run of mix of NLEs, though.

I teach production courses at a local community college. The academic upgrade pricing alone means I'll be pushing hard to replace all of our basic Final Cut Express stations with Media Composer and upgrading our other 10 Media Composer installs with MC4.0. Pay a chunk of change now amortorized over 4 years considering all the free upgrades? That's cheap as hell! Shouldn't be too hard to push through. Avid just changed the game for academics, that's for sure.

Barry, according to Marianna at Avid answering my question about this:

"The short answer is yes. It's not that we added support for P2 as it was already there but with the new editors we have the ability to remove advanced or normal 3:2 on the fly. No render needed. woooo hoooooo"

Again . . . WOO HOO!!!!

According to Carl (moderator on the Avid forum):

". . . you do not need a support contract to keep using a dongle with v4. If you use a dongle with whatever version you're running now, you can keep using it with v4 in exactly the same way."

I just bought v3.5 and I'm also told I will not have to pay to upgrade to v4.0. This is for anyone that upgraded to v3.5 from Sept 1 through Sept 16; you will be able to download it free from a protected page once they go live later this month.

Oh, and the original analog Mojo may actually work with some configurations. It is an EOL product, which just means that Avid is not testing it anymore.

Avid is indeed making some sweet moves with v4.0 - I'm looking forward to it! :)

Anyone played with the new version yet? Looking forward to hearing reports of the mixed formats in a single timeline and the 24pa pulldown removal.

I think it will be so cool to shoot a film in 1080 24PA, then drag certain 720PN slow-mo shots on to that one timeline and have them play together seamlessly. Thank you, Avid!!
