I just BOUGHT media composer 2.8 earlier this year, and now 3.0 is out. anybody coming from 2.8 to 3 think it's worth me buying the software all over again? or is there not enough worthwhile about 3 to make that purchase?

I believe that the upgrade is free...look into that.

bear in mind that 3.0 is Leopard only, and best on an Intel Mac. But 3.0.5 has a feature that I REALLY like. Select all to the right or left...so that I can move all my clips to the right so that I can open a gap that I might need to add something to the middle of a sequence. Before that meant adding FILLER, and if your layers overlap, that is a HUGE hassle. This is a feature stolen from FCP...and I am glad they stole it.

But look into the upgrade...I believe it is free. Go to Avid.com and see.

The other benefits of 3.0 are non-rendering TC "window" dub, open captioning and it can work better with their newer hardware. If you have Avid Assurance its a free upgrade I paid nothing on my MC 2.8 system. For my Xpress system the cost was 500, well worth this minimal investment to have two systems that are the same that rock.

i bought the media composer software, academic that's the thing. not sure if i'm gonna get the upgrade for free, sounds a little too good to be try. i've never really known avid to ever give anything out for free.

There was a free upgrade, but it's expired (and I'm not sure it was available for Academic).

If you can't upgrade your Media Composer Academic, it would be worth the $295 (Academic price, if you still qualify) to buy MC 3.0 (which will run on Tiger or Leopard, actually). There are massive improvements in speed--much more responsive, renders faster, imports/exports faster, etc...

Michael.
