media center and nvidia geoforce 7900

I know that windows media center is not supposed to play well with avid xpress pro - in addition I am not sure if the geoforce 7900 gs is supported but i have read reports that both have worked with avid.

I have my xps 710 up and running and avid 5.2.2 loads up - the media tool works and all videos can be displayed and scrubbed - however, when I play the video it just freezes in the composer window - If media center were the issue i would imagine i would get an error -

any ideas of what I can check - i tried updating the geoforce driver and that didnt work.

Even though you're not getting an error message Media Center could still be the issue. Avid is a picky mistress.

Make sure that you don't have any other video program open along with Avid. I've seen video freeze if Windows Media Player or the like are open in the background.

i bit the bullet and figured out a way to install pro - the xps 710 requires special raid drivers on startup to install the OS - a bit of a pain

but now avid works - i guess i should have beleived when i read avid doesnt like media center

oh well

Has anybody asked WHY Avid Xpress is so picky? Is Premiere Pro that picky? Or Canopus? Avid Xpess may be a more complete edit system (or maybe not actually), but it seems almost as though Avid deliberately doesn't even try to make their software more adaptable to a range of computer systems.

Exactly. Avid tells you in very specific terms what computers are certified to run their software. They do this to provide rock solid stability and reliable performance. That's something that's worth more than all the tea in Chine to a post house that's working on tons of footage with unforgiving deadlines, or to a feature film that's got millions and millions of dollars invested in a film. Even an independent guy like me values that performance enough to have scrapped my home built systems (yes, I started out balking at Avid certifieds) and go with Avid certified machines. The reduction of downtime and headaches alone are worth the price of admission.

People look at Avid like it was just another Premiere or any other NLE. It really is a different beast and must be looked at more in a total cost of ownership realm instead of a pricetag realm.
