mechanical noise when zooming out / Firewire prob.

Hi,

when I zoom out (With Servo-zoom) with my hvx-200 I hear a "Grunge" near the full zoom-out point. Then when I zoom in, I hear that same Grunge for a few seconds until it is zoomed in a little bit. Then there is no noise. The noise occurs only in the fully zoomed out region.

I sent the cam to repair, and they say the whole lens assembly should be replaced.
Everything works fine except for that noise. Are they trying to rip me off?

Also, The cam firewire port won't work anymore. Neither the firestore nor a computer recognize the camera anymore. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Karle

As far as I know, Panasonic almost always thinks that it is better to change to whole lens (since they don't want to put to much strength to find the part that is the problem) probably also to earn more money.

Sorry to say it, but your firewire port is broken. I had the same problem, costed me 4000 swedish crowns to repair, about 500 dollars... This is, IMO, the main issue and flaw with this camera, shame since it is a beautiful thing to work with. And never does the guarantee cover it!

I really hope that it works out for you!

Hello Karle,

Is the Grunge sound you’re hearing more like Pearl Jam or Nirvana?

It could be caused by a few different things. It’s very possible that replacing the lens is the best or only option. Depending on the cause, it may need an alignment or it may need replaced. Without seeing the camera itself, you might ask if they could try an alignment first. On the one hand, if it solves the problem it’s much less than replacing the lens outright. On the other hand, if that fails, it will still need to be replaced.

If the problem is ‘grit’ inside the lens. It can be taken apart and cleaned, reassembled and aligned. However, if there’s already too much wear, there will still be a noise problem. Then you are back at square one (live with the noise or replace the entire lens).

As far as I know, Panasonic almost always thinks that it is better to change to whole lens (since they don't want to put to much strength to find the part that is the problem) probably also to earn more money.

Cleaning the lens is generally three or four hours of labor. To repair it, would take longer and also add the cost of parts. Again, depending on the problem and the wear on the lens, you may still end up with a noisy lens. At a certain point it is much more cost efficient to replace the lens than to repair it.

Service centers don’t really make anything on the parts. Things like boards, drums, lens assemblies are expensive. They would make more money charging you for time wasted trying to fix a lens that is beyond repair.

We see broken firewire ports pretty often. It’s not a defective part, but it is small and doesn’t tolerate much mishandling. Unfortunately, the cable is often jammed in from a bad angle, upside-down, pulled on or jerked, etc... these things can damage any type of cable port but some take more abuse than others, and it’s easy to forget that some need a little more careful handling.
