Ok this isn't a film more a test to see if I could comp cg into live footage, something I've never done before ( I work in the games industry but have always wanted to be in films)

But I'm hoping to start producing more shorts.

Would love to have your feedback, all crits and comments welcome.

All the best

I'm not a CG guy or anything, but film making wise
I thought it was Good reveal - and the robot looked well integrated for a test.
Great work in my opinion.

Thanks Lliam, to be honest there wasn't much though on the actual take. We just went outside and did it one take, as you can tell by the acting :)

Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated.

That looked and sounded pretty damn cool, can't fault it.

Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff.

Thank you so much for your compliment tmnt, it means a lot.

It was a lot of fun to do. I have no idea about sound design, we just went into the garage and found the loudest most aggressive tools we had and recorded them through the camcorder. Funny thing is , the most effective sound I feel is the piston sound which was in fact two different spray cans.

I'm hoping to leave the games industry soon and finally get into what I've always wanted to do since I was 7 and start making films. I think it's wise to take thins in baby steps though, thus this first video :)
We've set up a youtube channel where we'll be posting all the new stuff we do on there. I'll hopefully also get time to go through how we go about doing a lot of the things.
Not that I'm claiming to be an expert at any of this but I'm a true believer in learning from each other, and if our youtube channel can help others as much as places like these forums have helped me then that can't be a bad thing.

Thank you again for your encouragement.

Sweet business.

I'm always in awe of people who can bring CGI to life from their home computer. Usually it's an epic fail.

Very nicely done.

it looks realistic, only at the end the robot stepts to the left...so it's a bit strange that he would step on the camera suddenly.

But CGI wise it looks very nice

Thanks Brain, dre83

dre83, yep you're totally right with the whole "why does the camera crash out when he didn't step on us"
Because this was meant to be a test we hadn't really thought about the end so it was just a quick way of finishing and still have an end of sorts. I did also think that it didn't make much sense having bars as they're also associated with broadcast and not some DV handycam.
We were thinking of going with the digital break up look but decided seeing as it was just a test that we didn't want to spend too much more time on it. So premiere's colour bars were the quickest solution :)

yes, I understand it was just a quick quick solution, which was founded in 0,009 seconds :-p

But maybe it was another robot from the other site :-p

Hey thanks JonE5

I didn't actually make the robot. It started out that my friend wanted to see if we could place a robot into live footage. We decided to just download a mesh from a free model site. I rigged it using a plugin for Maya called the setup machine. The materials were created in a render called Maxwell render, which in my opinion is one of the best renderers out there. We used PFtrack to track the main footage, along with mocha and after effects to track the dust and car alarm lights (that you just about notice through all the compression of youtube). There's even footprints too but I don't think you can really see them.
After effects was used to comp and grade the footage, Premiere was used to add the sounds which were just a collection of tools from my garage.
Hope that was of some help?

I played around with the colour quite a bit. I think I got to that point where I didn't know what looked right and what looked wrong anymore. Thanks for the observation, really appreciate your feedback.

Here's a link to the animation in Maya
