"Mean Creek"

Funny you started this thread, I just saw it last night. It was excellent.

Great performances all around from the kids.

Was it just me or was this shot completely handheld, even on the wide and master shots. It seemed like the frame was always bouncing around.

Nonetheless, it worked. Seemed like a documentary and I like how they incorporated the Home Video POV.

Yes this was great. For those who havent seen it tho - Dont see the trailer. It practically shows you everything.

I guess its a difficult film to market so they felt they had to reveal a lot in the trailer, but Im glad I saw it after the movie.

great film tho!

did I say dont watch the trailer? :-)

I actually bought it, I liked it so much. The commentary track is excellent.

You can buy it used from "Netflix" for $5.99

That's funny as well, i just saw this last night, it's one of those movies that stays with you. I mean it's scary you can imagine yourself in that role. very frightening.
Excellent photography.

rented this a couple of months and go and really liked it. the young actors were all good as well

It had the same plot as Bully, I wouldn't be surprised if they "borrowed" from the script. The production company that did Mean Creek were hiring a couple months ago on Craigslist Los Angeles.

Mean Creek plotline on imdb. When a teen is bullied, his brother and friends lure the bully into the woods to seek vengeance.

Bully plotline. Based on a true story. Naive teenagers plot to murder one of their own, who has been too much of a bully to them.

"Bully" and "Mean Creek" both have some similarities (and they are both good), but they are still very different movies.

I loved this movie and have watched it a couple of times. I agree, the commentary is excellent.

i saw this a while back. what impressed me was how real if felt. it did feel like a documentary and the acting was so good, i never thought, oh that performance could have been better.

netflix has some great prices on used dvd's. i just got back from there. born into brothels is selling for 12.99 at hollywood video (used) and its 5.99 at netflix.

question, do you think 16mm gives a more "real" look than 35mm. i just saw bloody sunday too and it had that documentary feel to it too. just thinking out loud.

I really liked this movie. It's right in line with my taste. I love coming of age stories with a dark twist. I want to direct one myself in the future. I really liked some of the crude humor as well.

It blows my mind that most of this was shot on super 16mm.

You know that girl actress is mean creek, she is scary, acting beyond her years, her voice and facial acting is very very frightening.

I totally agree. The girl is astounding. So natural. As others have mentioned, it almost feels like a documentary at times.

Just finished watching it... very, very good! Exceptional performances.

Regarding the docu feel that everyone is discussing; maybe this is due in part to how much some of the scene structure changed in the edit (per the director's commentary). Of course this also happens in many feature films but as I rewatched a few of the more "real" feeling scenes, I thought that the editing itself really contributed the unscripted quality to the narrative - very reminiscent of a documentary. Using the 16mm/video POV combination added to that as well.

As for the original story (also based upon the director's commentary), several scenes were completely removed - like the wildlife officer almost catching them - that in my opinion, would have harmed the emotional tone had they been included. Some very good editorial choices indeed. Again helping to shape the story in a very docu-like fashion.

Any thoughts?
