ME66 too hot for DVX-100

I have been out of the video loop for a while but a buddy has asked me to work on a project so I am dusting off the DVX-100.

I normally record audio with a K6 with either the ME64, ME66 or ME67 capsule. As I recall, sometimes when recording "loud" sounds, the signal sounds distorted so to speak. It isn't clipping, more of a slight pops and cracks as the sound picks up. The db meter is always well below 0db so I know it isn't clipping.

The only online sample I have is at the bottom of this page. You should be able to hear what I am referring to as the engines rev up. If you are unfamiliar with how a 32 valve V8 sounds, then you may not hear it.

If anyone knows if that is what I am hearing or if the K6 is known to be too hot for the DVX it would really help me out.

Thanks.

I have the same (K6/ME66) combo and I have noticed the same problem many times over the 5 years I have been using it. It is nearly impossible to record live music without sounding like its clipping. I have experimented with the levels many times w/no improvement. I have a feeling that a physical part is vibrating/rubbing something within the mic at a certain level of DB, or maybe the bass tone. Just guessing at the cause, but you are not alone.

It is an awesome mic for dialog though. For loud stuff the on camera mic does pretty good (on the HVX at least).
