MC 5 - no Native AVCHD

As i said before, i tried the same files on a very powerful pc in my job... same results .

Hp workstation with dual zeon, 8 gb ram, 64 bit windows, and nvidia quadro fx4600 .... i dont think there is a problem with that !!!

I don't get why anybody would want to be editing AVCHD natively. You're dealing with an Inter-Frame codec that has to render out almost every frame to playback. Of course you're going to get playback issues trying to edit with it natively. Even a top of the line computer, wouldn't be able to do it. I'm 90% sure that FC and PPro are working with non-native files as well, they just don't let you know you are.

Some people are in a really big damn hurry... To me, AMA is great on set or for news, etc., where fast turnaround trumps quality. Otherwise, I transcode every time. Playback is gorgeous.

I dont have the time to wait transcoding hours of footage.
For one hour of hdslr footage i have to wait 2-3 hours for importing !!!
With Premiere cs5 , i can play 2 streams with colour correction of 1080 25p streams natively , without problem.

Sounds to me like CS5 is your best bet then. No point in fooling around with anything else.

Adobe is essentially useless for native AVCHD editing as well due to the chroma bug documented here...

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=212800

The bug exists in CS3, CS4 and CS5 and extends to Premiere, After Effects and who knows what else. It appears that, if you're doing any kind of serious work, you'll be transcoding that AVCHD somewhere along the way no matter which editing path you choose.

Time is of the essence = Native editing
Quality (and CC/FX work) is of the essence = Upressed Transcode

That said, I am impressed by the quality of the Native AVCHD editing in Edius.

Simply wishing AVID had added it to the AMA capabilities. I suspect we will probably see it in the near future.

Obviously no one has any clue how complex of a format AVCHD is. CS5 only deals with it decently because of the new way it can access the full power of the computers processors.

People crying for "native native NATIVE!" need to get a clue about video formats. Not all of them are meant to be dealt with native. If you want native, then buy a camera that software deals with natively.

It's not some of us don't understand the complexity of any particular format, I would say it's the money we're gonna to spend or already spend on any NLE software. as a customer of course I would like to buy a magic bullet to deal with all devil, like in the early day editing hdv is more like a dream now see what evolve now...
To all NLE merchant, you guys are almost there except a few hick-up like edius neo missing MXF, avid missing avchd so for and so on, preimere can deal with them all if I'm not wrong...down to u fcp, WHAT IS IN YOUR SLEEVE......

keep in mind native is not always the best solution. Avid does EOS h.264 native but is that really the master format you want when you go to CC. My hope is that Avid will ad AMA support for AVCHD. I can promise I will still transcode to DNxHD.

Or as Barry says go CS5 Adobe has really embarrassed these emerging codecs and cameras and provides workflow and mecury playback to master in those formats.
