MBP won't recognize capture cam?

Hey all,

I'm ready to start editing on my new MBP (15", 2.66ghz, 4GB RAM, etc) but when I go to connect my capture camera - both by USB and Firewire - my Mac won't recognize it. It doesn't come up as a device, like I think it should.

Does it matter that it is a relatively old HandyCam? Does it matter that it's been first used with my PC at home?

Thanks,
Milos

PS: If this is a "stupid"/obvious question, I apologize, I've just never had this problem before. Thanks again.

Well, it won't work over USB. There is a chance that your firewire port is blown on the handycam. First thing I'd do is go to the apple menu (top left corner)>About This Mac>More Info...>Firewire.

If it shows anything besides the fact that the port exists on the computer, then the port shouldn't be busted.

Can you test the capture camera via firewire on a PC you've used before, to confirm the camera's FW port and the cable are good?
If good, then look at the MBP settings.

I normally capture by firewire to the PC. I just happened to have a USB lying around so I tried that as well. However, when I capture to the PC, I use a 4 to 6 pin firewire, not a 4 to 9. I don't think that should make a difference.

Thanks guys, I'll try this stuff when I get back to school. Anything else?

Thank you so much - it's all set now!
