Maya Users

Wow that looks really good!! I wonder if you put all of your settings up so that I could copy them, if it would work or not ?

I'll give that a try and post the data asap.

In the meantime, what version of maya are you using?
Because the original download was version 8.

//There are 4 nodes in the material:
Blinn
Lambert
Particle Cloud
Shader Glow

and alot of settings including two ramp textures in the blinn shader. I'm not sure how to post them all. I suppose I could try but it may take awhile.

//That would take me a few hours I think including all of the ramp values.
Do you have any other ideas how I could do it?

//I wonder if you downloaded the free maya 8.5 PLE and installed it in a different directory, if it would screw up your current version? Because then you could open that downloaded file and view the settings as you know more about them than I do. I didn't modify anything, that material came with the download.

In the meantime I'm experimenting with C4D trying to get that look.
This needs more work for sure but here's the WIP so far. I am still working on it though.

Yes Maya 8 autodesk

Take a couple screen shots with the attribute editor and hyphershade open, or you could post the values. You don't really need to post all of it, but something to give me a rough idea. :)

I own the licensed version.

I'd wonder if a glow would help ?

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!

Loop:
I put a gradient in the relflection channel. Looks like this.

grad_capture.jpg

The colors are the 7 common colors of the rainbow:
red,(255, 0, 0)
orange, (255, 127, 0)
yellow, (255, 255, 0)
green, (0, 128, 0)
blue, (0, 0, 255)
indigo (75, 0, 130)
violet. (127, 0, 255)

I see the maya material has 2 ramps(gradients) in the transparency channel.
So I think I'm on the right track. I'm still not happy with it yet.

Here's some screen grabs."

Thanks alot for doing that, big help. I actually downloaded the file and if finally worked, I have no idea why it didn't before. Sometimes Maya acts funny when having larger scenes open for longer than an hour from my experience. Now I think it boils down to my settings, because it's still looking more like glass than a prism/diamond. I'm not really getting the inter wall to wall reflection like yours , here take a look and tell me what you think.

What were you settings for GI, caustics, ray tracing, etc.. ?

I think I just about got it (the diamond). :) As for the ring this is something I put together for the picture, quick and fast model. I had to play around with the shader & ramps to get it just about right. I'm sure I can still tweak a few more things, but I'm pretty happy with it.

Looks good so far...facets on the bottom of your diamond will help. The only reason a diamond has that look is because of the way it's cut. If it's as smooth as glass, it's harder to tell the difference due to less surfaces to refract light.

twocik: Looks good but I can't help thinking the models edges are too smooth/rounded. In C4D that can be caused by the phong angle being above zero. I'm not sure what's causing your's to smooth a bit. Sharper edges/corners would help with the refraction. Looks good though.

I finally had some more time to work on my C4D diamond. This is more of the coloring effect I was going for. I used a Spectral Shader in the color channel blended with a white color. Still needs more work to get it sparkly though.

Way back in the thread somebody was asking for a step by step tut covering all of Maya. I'm looking at 3dbuzz.com Mastering Maya: The Fundamentals right now and there is 80 hours of training for just $100.

I'm also a member of fxphd.com which is an online school that teaches (amongst many) a Maya Introduction class this term. Here you don't just have video tut's but also great forums where the teachers help you along the way.
