Maya Users

Your right oneinfiniteloop.

//edit:eek:oo sorry man. I took something out of context.

Ok I tried the file (both) and no go. Maya is saying

"Errors have occurred while reading this scene that may result in data loss. Please check the Script Editor for details. "

Not sure what that means, but I'm guessing it's no going to work.

Take a look at the Script Editor and tell me what it says...I remember this happening and I think I figured it out by what the script editor said.

I think I figured out how to get it to look much better, except the very bottom of the diamond (showing outlines). Tell me what you guys think.

This one I turned down pretty much everything (GI, diffusers, etc..)

OneInfinteloop I'll get to that to you tomorrow, I'm falling asleep at the wheel here. zzzzz ZZZZ ZZ zzzZZ lol

Looking a lot better. One thing that will give it more of a diamond look is having more cuts like a diamond. Obviously you have the cuts around the crown, but I don't think you have all the internal ones as well as the ones on the bottom.

What is your refraction set to? It's still borderline glass-looking.

I'm going to play around with maya for a few days.
Somehow it seems a little easier this time around.
I'll dop in tomorrow and maybe join in.

"What is your refraction set to? It's still borderline glass-looking."

I think I set it too 2.147. I'm almost home now, let me double check.

That's about right...I guess it's the lack of facets and the smoother bottom part. I'm taking a crack at it right now in C4D, I'll post my results in a minute.

Here's my attempt, I did a couple tests with caustics and GI and I wasn't digging the results. This one is with 5 lights, one with area shadows, and scene wide AO.

EDIT: also had a sky enviroment with a HDRI image from Debevec.org's gallery.

Here's the second one, closer up, took 41 min to render.

41mins to render, wow what system are you running, or is that what to expect with Gi & caustics ?

Yeah, I've seen this before...it might be due to the person who saved out the file in the first place. I've found that maya is very finicky about importing and exporting and all the file madness. It's most likely the result of someone not exporting right, but, hey, what can you do?

That 41 min render has no GI or caustics...ambient occlusion only with 5 lights, one with area shadows on. The time is mostly due to the high refractive index of diamond and all the facets and transparency, fresnels, etc.

I'm running a MacBookPro 2.16ghz w/ 3gb RAM. If I rendered that with GI and caustics, the times could easily triple, if not more...

I wish your file was a .mb file so that I could dissect it. :)

I'm going to continue playing around with the settings, and shaders a little more. I'll post some updates.

BTW your diamond looks really good !!!!

One thing I love about C4D is the material system. It's much easier for me to understand, but I have heard rumblings about it's not as powerful as something node based.

Here is a link to a tut that I used to create the base glass material. I did it a while ago, and I changed the refraction to 2.417, then also put a fresnel shader into the specular color channel. You can probably follow it well enough to adapt to MR and maya.

EDIT: Just did a quick search and found this article on DGS material's in MR. It seems to give a good explanation of everything. I would set the diffuse to a very low setting, glossy in the middle, specular is high and sharp, lor to 2.419, and trans to 0.9. I'm not sure how to add a fresnel to control the transparency, but that would be more physically accurate.

Yeah, it's surprising that C4D's materials aren't node based. Even Lightwave, which isn't a program that changes much, has a node-based material editor - which is pretty cool, actually.

I wanted to put up the ipod I model, but couldn't get the colors/shinny gloss right. I tried over and over again, I couldn't get the black model to shine in a darker room for some reason. ??? I need to learn how to do the black limbo thing for this one. If you have ever seen the new jose cuervo black commercial (the one where the bottle is revealed from a bag), this is what I was trying to attempt. :badputer:

Well anyway her are a few more models:)

Even though they're not node based, they are still pretty powerful. I haven't run into any limitations yet, for what I do.

I tried that diamond download and here's what I got.
I spent a couple hours with the PLE and managed to crash it already.

I like how the refraction causes the color changes. I found the refrective index for the blinn shader but not for this particular material, but I'm sure it's there under a different description. Something I haven't been able to do in C4D but it's got me thinking now how, maybe with expresso or scripting.

I'd rather have a non-PLE edition before I really jumping into it though.
I'll keep it around but I not spending any serious time on it.
I used default light too.
I'm done with the PLE for now. Back to C4D.
