May have to lower my standards...

The AF100 Manual ( p.8 vol 1) states:

"This camera-recorder is compatible with the AVCHD standard , and uses low-cost and easily-available SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Cards as recording media.

The unit enables high-quality picture recording CLOSE TO BROADCASTING STANDARD, as well as highly creative video production."

Kind of wondering how "close".... and to what specific "broadcasting standard"?

Would it be the camera or AVCHD that is the limiting factor?

"Broadcast quality" is one of those meaningless phrases like "professional quality". It depends on your frame of reference, what you're doing, and what the content is. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Network standards? Maybe not AVC. Maybe depends on the network. But, my friend, if you want "broadcast quality" in a $5000 camera, you'll need to spend a few more grand and record out HD-SDI for a more broadcast ready codec. Go price a Varicam, then come back home to the AF if that's a bit much.

I am not too worried about it and somewhat amused it is mentioned in the manual . Only asking why they said it.

...but actually it did not refer to Broadcast quality. It said Broadcast standard.

Thats something completely different and there are broadcasters that are very very fussy abut that. eg BBC , Discovery Channel, TV3...

My frame of reference and my content ...is for broadcast.

It's four words buried in a manual, just some arbitrary copy written by guy who pulled manual writing assignment. No doubt he's seen this thread and has gone off to commit hari kari.

I recently, sort of, wrote about this with respect to the Sony F3 - Sony F3 is not HD - broadcasters set minimum technical standards for what is considered HD. For most of those broadcasters a inter-frame recording at 24Mb/s (which is what AVCCAM is) doesn't qualify. However paired with an external recorder that can exceed the minimum specs the camera should qualify in all other respects.

The limiting factor then is the codec, not the camera itself.

Broadly speaking a 50Mbit/s Inter-frame (Long GOP) or 100Mbit/s Intraframe codec is required to be HD for international broadcasters - at the lowest end then that means XDCAM HD422, DVCPRO HD or AVC Intra 100, then you move upwards in bitrate (if not quality) with HDCAM, HDCAM SR etc.

Thank you Dylan.

For others wishing to understand a little more about Broadcast standards

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDV (scroll down to 'Use in Broadcast')

This maybe helpful for those considering purchasing a camera ( any camera) with the intent of shooting and obtaining broadcast sales contracts. For most..it aint an issue.

If your shooting is good who gives a damn if it's broadcast quality.

With some limitations, there's a lot of truth in this.

Great footage that's not perfect (in a technical sense) will always be more appealing than bad footage with perfect technical parameters.

If you can pull your eye away from the pixel-peeping microscope, you can get back to shooting.

And thats really cool until your show is rejected due to blanking errors or some such tech issue.

If you are worried about shooting for a network and handing them an SD card at the end of the shoot - then yes that might be a problem.
More so that "broadcasters" are 3-4 years behind the equipment curve. I still see many shooters out with BetaSP units.
I am seeing more XDCam being used.
If you are doing the editing you usually transcode the AVCHD to Pro Res if on FCP or DNx if on AVID....
I use to shoot TV spots with 3/4" - Spot delivery is usually Digital Betacam for SD and HDCAM for HD.
I use a post house that can also ftp spots to DG Fast Channel.
But it seems accepted delivery methods are a moving target.
Most of my work is going to the web and "broadcast" seems to be fading fast.
