So a couple of weeks ago I was performing a really large render using 3d studio. The software reported something to the order of 13 hours. Nothing for it but to get some sleep says I. Next morning, I grab my coffee, turn on the monitor and expect to see the fruits of my labor...I'm like a kid on Christmas morning during these moments. The monitor warms, the image fades up....Slowly....Slowly...But WTF is this! There before my eyes is the BIG BLUE FATAL EXCEPTION, ERROR, ERROR, BIG BASTARD SCREEN OF DEATH! My 160 GB Maxtor hard drive has done a swan dive into LA LA land. After checking all the known probable causes, I find nothing wrong. After formatting the drive, I cautiously return it into service where it performs like new. Like all other bad things that go away, The memory of my wayward drive disapeared into the murky depths of my cluttered skull and I resumed a normal life of rendering. Yesterday, following a scheduled re-boot, a boot message informs me that the drive is not S.M.A.R.T anymore and is going to fail. I haul the bugger out and place it in another machine and get the same result. I check the drive and find nothing wrong in its performance. However HAL had told me it was going to fail. I'm sweating because I can't find the reciept nor remember where I bought the damned thing. I then downloaded a diagnostic program from Maxtor, ran it, and was confronted by the same message "Failing drive!" I click next in the diagnostic software and am given a diagnostic code to report to Maxtor. Off to the web site where I enter the code and drive serial number. Then it all went away...Maxtors site informs me that I have three months warranty left on the drive and a replacement is now en route! My point here ( for those who are beginning to wonder if I had one) is...Holy ****, I wish everything worked that way when It comes time to return a bad device! Yes the damned thing failed, but two hours after IT told me it was going to die, I had a new one leaving the factory door destined for a trip to my house.....THANKS MAXTOR. I feel really secure with the 4 other Maxtor Large capacity drives I'm using.
