MatteBox Suggestions

I have been looking at buying a new Mattebox and have been looking at the Obox and a couple of chrosziel. Was wondering what many of you are using. I would like a swing out, but it is not necessary, I know the Obox is not, but it looks very rugged. Opinions on Brand, and model, and it doesn't have to be on of the above.

Thanks

Check out the DVXUser Marketplace. User dregenthal is selling a Chrosziel mattebox that should work nicely with the F3.

I've also owned the O-Box and can definitely say it's rugged. It's a bit bigger than I'd like, but it's built to last. Between the Arri MMB-1, the Chrosziel and the O'Connor, I don't think you can go wrong.

I just recently purchased the O-Box, and I have to say that I really like it. I do not have the others to compare to but I think it is more compact than the Chrosziel and less expensive. What I really like is that there are available both the 114 mm attachments for the Sony primes and a 80 mm attachment for the Nikon lenses which take a 77 filter. They squeeze over the lens easily making a tight seal. It is also made of a very rugged material, and has a mini cheese plate on the top.

Keep them coming guys and thanks for the info so far. I should have stated that I would need at least 2 4x5.6 stages, and one that rotates, as that is what all my current glass is. Plus I have also found that a 4x4 doesn't quite cover my Optimo 28 -76. I currently have a Arri MB-20, the first version, and have hated it since I bought it. Now it has run its course and time for an upgrade. Nothing against Arri, and I have heard the new version is much better.

In that case, I'd seriously look at the Chrosziel 456 Academy Mattebox. It's got two 4x5.65" trays, both of which rotate independently, I believe.

I have used every matte box mentioned so far and own the chrosziel(different model but similar), arri mmb-1 and arr-lmb-5, my favorite is the lmb-5.
I switched the 2 stage filters to 3 stage filters from
http://shop.lentequip.com/collections/frontpage/products/3-stage-filter-conversion-kits
and also bought the rota pola so i didn't need to have a rotating filter section.
you can almost get any size back for the lmb-5, the biggest one i have is 143mm which fits the Red 18-85.

How big is the front diameter of the 18-85? I thought about getting one at one point, but found a good deal on the 28-76.

+2

Two independently rotating filter stages are a big plus for example if you want to rotate grad nd and polarizer at the same time. I had this same debate few months ago and I ended up getting the Chrosziel 456 academy. The filter stages can also take 5x5 filters and that's what I'm using. I believe you can go as wide as 12mm before vignetting. At least I've had no problems with my 18-50mm red zoom. It is light and versatile box and maybe the best choice if you intend to use super wide lenses with the mattebox on. O'box might be sturdier but it's also heavier.

142mm

+1 for O-Box. It works with everything from Red 18-85 on down to a Nikon 50mm 1.8
For the price, hard to beat!

I use it with the RED 18-85mm and I have a heavy Panasonic monitor on it.

OK, so maybe RED Digital is wrong!

  • Each lens comes with both front and rear lens caps
  • PL mount required
  • Imperial lens measurement version
  • Calibrated T stops and focus marks
  • OD: 142mm
  • Length: 11 in [28 cm]
  • Weight: 9.9 lb [4.5 kg]
  • Use of lens support recommended.

All I know is that both my lmb-5 and mmb-1 with 143mm backs fit the 18-85
There is a video that Mitch Gross does on you tube about the mmb-1 where he mentions the 143 fitting the 18-85.

I have not heard of that brand, but it looks like the Red Rock mattebox. I will not buy a Red Rock, just not durable.

Do they make a swing out adapter for the MMB1? All good comments guys. A mattebox is kind of a personal choice just like what camera are we going to shoot with, but I like to get opinions to see what people like and don't.
