Matte Boxes: worth it OR waste of $$$

The O'Connor FF is great, especially the friction wheel for non-Cine gear lenses, but it costs almost as much as an AF100. The O'Connor O box looks great as well, but I ended up with an Arri MMB-1 because it had more accessories at this point and I expect to buy the Arri FF soon, as it does more than our Zacuto FF.

Whilst on the subject of matte boxes what size filter can I get away with on the af100? If my min focal length is 14mm, will I get away with a 4x4 filter in my matte box, or I do need to get 4x5.65 so as not to vignette?

It's always best to start with the larger size even if you don't need it now, you can, and probably will, grow into it. You may purchase or rent a wider lens at some point.

Good shooting and best regards,

Thanks Leo, was just wondering how wide you would need to go before the 4x4 becomes constraining. It's all about the budget :)

With the advent of very low cost cinema cameras, thus great numbers sold, the market could use a Matte Box designed by the likes of Kalashnikov; rugged and reliable, yet cheap to manufacture.

Surely a Matte Box could be designed using stampings rather than expensively machined components.

Just have a look at the folding buttstocks; certainly not complex German precision, but they're very tough and work perfectly every time.

Good shooting and best regards,

Wish I could answer, but cannot. Lot's of savvy folks here who may help.

Steve, It's not the filter, but the stack up that is limiting. Some matte boxes themselves get in the way. A 4x4 right against the lens is no issue. A stack of 4x4s plus the wrong matte box is the issue. Most good matte box vendors will tell you what the maximum angle the box will handle without vignetting.

"...worth it OR waste of $$$ "

As with anything, there is such a wide variance of audience and application here. Experience tells you what you need. Start simple and within budget. Then you will find out if it is adequate or if it leaves you short of your needs and understand what level of product you need for your application.

I don't need filters (yet) and I just need a flag. I'm using this. It looks like crap, but I don't have clients. I do my own thing, so it doesn't matter what it looks like.

Flag holder - $19
Flag -$0

Functionality - perfect

IMO, the 4x4 Genus is that MB.

The AK/MB-47 Matte Box? Auto or semi-auto?

Have a look at the Petroff mattebox, we have one here at school and it's made by hand by a guy in Mississauga, ON Canada :) Its really nice, just wish it was cheaper.

Note: don't get it from the Zacuto store if you're in Canada as its $1250 (but thats the only USA dealer sorry). Canadians can look at Cinequip White, Image Gear, or Precision Camera (all in Toronto). Should be only $1030 for the 4x4 with top+side flags and 1 filter stage.
