Matte box

How do you handle using a matte box with a zoom lens? I have a Petroff matte box with a Zacuto Universal Donut that works fine with a non zoom lens, but not with a zoom lens that moves when you zoom. What will work for this situation without having to get a different matte box?

I had the same question with the Af-100. Either buy a matte box that attaches to the actual lens (clip on feature like the Arri MMB-1, O-box etc...) and not the rails or buy lenses that don't physically extend when zoomng. Or get use to using primes :-)

I have the Zacuto version. But the fabric on the donut likes to get caught or slip off the moving zoom.

I have a Genus Nuns Knickers. It works well, but you need to use a step up ring because it's meant for a 72mm minimum diameter. The Zacuto Zacuto Universal Donut is more money, but works with a minimum of 40mm and would probably have less a chance of slipping off. I've thought about getting that one too, but I'm going to see how things go with the Genus. So far, so good.

You do need to determine your physical min and max points ahead of time so you get it in the right place since there's not that much room for movement. It works well for primes that change size physically when focusing. It's not as ideal for my Lumix 14-140 zoom lens.
