Matte box=$$$$$

I'm just getting my DVX100A next week and i'm looking for some accessories too. In my search, I shop for matte box and just found all the price from most companies, Chrosziel, Petroff, Cavision are all f***ing expensive. Certainly, it's an essential accessory for everyday situation, but what a price to pay.

The Cinematics matte box seem to be the only exception and affordable product, but with less control over the filters.

Have you looked at the Cavision 3 X 3

Re: Matte box=$$$$$

how wide is your wide angle adapter?

Re: Matte box=$$$$$

Not sure if many of you are aware that Burns and Sawyer is also selling some matte boxes other than the more obvious names. I was there this week and had my cam with my Century .7 wide adapter and tested out these 2 matte boxes.

The matte box with 2 filter holders vignettes just a tiny bit at full wide. In fact you cannot even see it on the viewfinder or LCD but you can see it on a production monitor.

The single filter matte box does not vignette at all.

Re: Matte box=$$$$$

yes indeed.

I have a .6 here I will test it out with.

Re: Matte box=$$$$$

ok, for someone who doesn't use too many filters, does a matte box make a huge difference in controlling the amount of light into the lens compared to the stock shade? what other benefits would one want a matte box(excluding filtration)? thanks...

Re: Matte box=$$$$$

Hello John,

I had a look at the Cavision 3x3 matte box, but I was in doubt if the 3x3 matte box was not to small and does the 3x3 vignette with wide angle adapters?

By the way, Cavision is canadian company, but they want to be pay in US dollar and charge 1.40 exchange when it is 1.31 right now. No man is a prophet in his own country. :(

Re: Matte box=$$$$$

Hey I just tried the red-eye wide angle, and it just barely gets away with it, just barely. Its safe in the TV safe but you can just see a sliver of the matte in underscan.

as for the advantages,

1. Filters, and with rotating stage you can use a polarizer.

2. Light Control, the stock mattebox doest really block all flares very well, and with the french flag you can point closer to the source without the image being washed out.

3. It looks cool... which shouldnt count but we all know it does.

4. most matteboxes come with rods, and when you have rods you can use things like follow focus etc.

Re: Matte box=$$$$$

Ok, so I guess when you say "red eye"you mean the .6 which is about 10% wider than the .7 so I should be fine.

Thanks Jared.

Re: Matte box=$$$$$

I confirmed this with Jason at Cavision and he stated that yes, with the 85mm 'Out' it works fine.

Also confirmed, that at this time, there are no plans for a Follow Fous to be used with the 3 by 3 system. This of course doesnt mean it cant be done by all of you crazy ass guerilla types.

Re: Matte box=$$$$$

Jason just told me that there was no way for the .7 lens to work with this matte box because the lens is 95 mm.

But I also thought that the .6 wide lens was 95mm.

Re: Matte box=$$$$$

John, I am confused here. I thought you could only "step down"". How can I put a 85 mm ring on a 95 mm lens?

Re: Matte box=$$$$$

****

Now I'm confused. :D
It was my nderstanding that you needed to use an 85mm out...

I guess we'll wait for Jarred to answer this :-/
