Matte Box Question - has anyone tried this one?

haha, WOW. well thanks for THAT THREAD.. Well anyways, any help from some veterans on good mattebox's under $1000 or am i going to just have to shell out $1500 and get the chrosizel and rods

I have the Formatt F-500 and it's really nice for the money. Around $350 and it works well. I don't know if there's an option to mount to rods, but it's so light weight that it doesn't really matter.

I also have the Formatt 500, and am happy with it, though there are some caveats around the way fits in relation to the DVX's built in mic, and possible vignetting if you add the extra UV filter (Do a search on the boards and read a few, oddly enough here's one fairly informative thread where I posted the final questions that didn't actually get answered, but I bought it anyway):

I have the Cavision 16X9 2 stage with rods, french flags and side flags. It is a really nice matte box for how much it costs, total with the flags and everything about $550.

i checked the EVS website, it doesnt say anything about the rods with the cavision, did you buy those seperate?

You need to call EVS directly, they don't have everything listed on the website, but they have most everything. I got everything in less than 5 days ordering directly from EVS.

Hey Shawn are you using the 72mm adapter and the UV filter? I have never noticed any vignetting with that combo. Maybe I'm just not too smart....no comments please. :)

I'm only using one 72mm UV filter and the "special Formatt adapter" that fits into the opening of the Formatt... Apparently the vignetting only occurs when you add two 72mm rings to step up to clear the mic so that the filter flap can come down, mine doesn't come all the way down as I only have on adapter and no vignetting that I've ever seen, I only have one filter at this time, a Schneider Truepol Polarizer. Are you using one or two step-up adapters?

This is the "special Formatt adapter" that I was talking about (for those that don't already have this), it fits into the Formatt on the wide side and has a 72mm thread side that mounts to the DVX:

Shawn. I'm using just one UV filter and the 72mm adapter you showed above and all is fine. I just access one of the stages from below and all is well. I really like the setup and it makes people stare. :) Nice and light too.

I guess I missed that even though it was mentioned in both the other articles, screw it on with the filter flap down (under the mic) and load from the bottom! ;-)

You have to check if the price they're listing includes the 72mm adapter, as it is by default there is only the opening with no threads and a screw pin that locks on to the various adapters, I imagine there are a number of different sizes depending on the camera, ours of course is 72mm.

Look at this page from B&H, they list a lot of the various adapters:

I would also consider calling EVS (Rush) as he offers a small discount to dvxuser.com users.
