Matte Box - Need Help Figuring Which One??

I'm looking to add a matte box and filters, but I need some advice on which will suite my needs. Century and Chroziel seem to be the best, but at around $1200-$1600, I'm wondering if Cavision's for $500-$600 will be just fine. Does every matte box work with circular or square filters?, why do I need rods? anything else I need to consider before buying? I rent this camera to low budget filmmakers, so I want something they won't feel is junk. Thanks for the help

Re: Matte Box - Need Help Figuring Which One??

check out vocas mattebox. I think www.vocas.com has info. If you get the wide angle version of the DV MK II it looks like you can use your normal lens, AND the Century Precision wide angle adapter (95mm front end) and the 1.6 adapter (a very annoying 105mm)
The problem with many matteboxes is for some reason the default max size for the hole is 104mm, with spacers used to bring it down to the size of your lens. But 105mm 1.6 adapter is just 1mm too big! (Why why why?) I know others that have taken their lenses to the local pro camera rental house and had 0.5mm milled off the metal all around the edge of the adapter (0.5 on top and bottom equals 1mm) I am a little nervous about "milling my lens if I don't have to, and the Vocas may be a bit cheaper than many....

Re: Matte Box - Need Help Figuring Which One??

I have the cavision 4x4
works well with one minor anoyance...
the rotaing filter tray is not very stable and can slide out of alignment easily when you try to adjust it.
I have learned to live with it and am able to adjust it without it screwing up on me (most of the time)
I keep a set of jewer's screw drivers with me to tighten the screws on the mattebox - it tends to become lose easily and this is the cause of the unstable tray.

you need the rods for mounting - the clip on feature is a joke.
