Hey folks,

The lens hood just aint cutting it! :D

Was looking around for a matte box and havent really found anything that in the price range Im wanting to spend.

How can a company justify charging $2,000+ for a lump of metal and plastic with 4 flaps ? You can buy a camera for that!

Anyway, what would folks recommend. Will boxes designed for the HVX200 and DVX100 fit or is that a no go?

Many thanks,

Rik

Ordering this cam soon and I too would like to know whats available in affordable matte boxes.

its much more than just a lump of plastic and flaps- alot of machining and fabricating go into making a good matte box, but I still agree- $2K is alot to put down. That's why many who use those rent. Then again matte box technology doesn't change a whole lot, so it rarely goes obsolete like a camera, and well made ones will last a lifetime if taken care of.

I went with Cavision. Its no Chrosziel, but it gets the job done for me and is well made for its cost. I went with these:

with

so with shipping its under $350. Then there are the Indian manufacturers that make pretty affordable kits. I can't speak for their matte boxes, but I bought a shoulder system from them and it is very well made. Much better than I expected:

I've read some pretty bad reviews about the indian made ones. stuff like the paint rubbing off as you handle it, the hinges or screws stripping, wearing out, or coming loose, etc... I too am looking for a box, trying to fight the sun while shooting with the blade which takes away the stock shade that comes with the hmc is hard avoiding flares and such.

Edweirdo, how is that cavision working out for you? I was looking at this 4x5 and i did not see an option to add flags and was wondering if yours was the same. How well does it work when your using it on a sunny day with out flags?
