Matte box for the HVX?

I dont know if this has been covered yet or not. If it has sorry, but does anyone know if any of the currently available matte boxes that work on the DVX100 will also work on the HVX100? Im not sure if they have released any physical specifications or not.

The key physical specification was lens diameter (82mm). Based on that, it's pretty reasonable to assume that any rails-based mattebox (like Chrosziel or CAvision) should work, provided you get an 82mm adapter ring. At CAVision I asked for one that specifically would support all three cams: HVX, HD100 and DVX; they set me up with the 4x4 16x9 two-slot model, and said the only thing I'll need for the HVX is an 82mm adapter ring.

The possible issue with using the same Chrosziel mattebox as the DVX is the aspect ratio. More likely due to the native 16:9 chipset the Mattebox for the HVX200 will be of the same form factor as the current Chrosziel 450-01 used for the Sony HDV cameras. The rod's will most likely have to be upgraded as well, as the HVX is a little larger body and may not be centered the same as the DVX. Until Panasonic releases the final specs to each of the manufacturers everyone is on hold waiting.

Hey Barry. Did they give you a model number for this one? I looked on their price list and I could find a matte box that fit that exact description. Of course, my wife usually has to find my car keys every morning so I'll admit I'm not the best looker :)

The one they told me would work is the MB4169 4x4" 16:9 two-stage hard-front. They said that one would work with all three cameras.

Are there any cheaper matte boxs than the ones mentioned above? I don't understand why these things are so expensive. They just look like barn doors designed to be put in front of the camera lens. I can get a small lighting kit with barn doors on each of them for under a thousand.

cavision pretty much is the cheapest you can get, the product is made in china which is why its cheaper than all the others that are usually made in some exotic european country or the US.

They should be cheaper, but they arn't.

Formatt Mattebox for HVX200?

Formatt Mattebox for HVX200?

I want to get a mattebox for my current 100A but I also want something that will work on the future HVX. Will the Formatt FM500 that everyone is talking about for the 100a also work with the hvx? I'm worried about vignetting with the different aspect ratio and the wider (4.3mm) lens. the 82mm difference shouldn't be a problem becuase I can just get the 82mm adapter.

Happy Filmmaking...

I have the Formatt box and it is a great price-value tool. I would expect it to work because the lenses are just as wide (around 32mm). I don´t think the 16:9 chip makes it "wider".

right now i screw the adapter ring in front of the UV filter and there is still no vignetting. so even if it would slightly show up i had some room to move it back. i might bring it to munich and test it out depending on how busy that show will be.....

Hmmm... I use Chrosziel Matte Boxes on my Varicams, but maybe I'll go with a CAvision box for the HVX since they're supporting the DVXuser community.

you have varicams?! like more than one?

I have formatt and it works great, except the french flag falls down very easily. I also got a step up adapter so I can use it with my nikkors with the m2.

Yeah matteboxes besides formatt = 2k piece of metal. Even if it folds away like an arri mattebox its way over priced. I still want them though.

Yeah, I have two of them. One I purchased from Abel Cinetech (fantastic company) and the other I picked up off an owner/operator who was retiring. They're awesome awesome awesome cameras.

My only complaint about them, and I'm being totally honest, is that I purchased them for my own productions (i'm a filmmaker by trade) yet have hardly been able to use them as they've been out on rentals continuously. It's always fun seeing what projects they go out on, but I wanna shoot with 'em too!! :(

Thanks for the rec. on Formatt by the way... always good to hear positive reviews from endusers. I don't know that I'd agree about Matteboxes being overpriced. Sure, they're pricey, but they're essential pieces of kit. :) I have the Chrosziel swing-away matteboxes on the varicams, and they're just waaaaaaay cool. Swing-away's are fantastic if you have lens interchangability of course; on an HVX, there wouldn't be much of a benefit.

There are a few other 'tools' that I'd like to see adapted for HVX usage which you'd typically find on full-size HD or Film cameras.

well, chrosziel is fitting their sunshade 440-01 with the hvx, as I understood from an email. so then you'd be done with just €500

Barry, I'm seeing that model number specifically being MB4169H-2. Is that what you were looking at?

Seems to be a 4x5. I was wondering if it's 4x5 to avoid vignetting, but in filter use, you'd use standard 4x4 filters (not 4x5 which are looking kind of rare).

You're implying that I already have a 'best friend' - let alone any friends, for that matter! ;)

Wow... you're in Cambodia??? That's fantastic!

I had one, briefly. It works with 4x4's and 4x5.65's.

Hey Barry,

Thanks for your guys input on matteboxs, but the question I have is why did you have a cavision only BRIEFLY?

Thanks,

Russell
