Matt G. on Wirelux

Hey everybody,

I wanted to let all of you know that one our most respected members here on DVXusers is being featured on Wirelux, Matt. For being such a loyal member here offering Musilux and Instalux cables to others is a wonderful gift that we should appreciate. All of the informative ways that he has brought up about the quality of Wirelux cables is best to nothing. Much credits to Matt.

Alan:)

When you see your own name in a thread title I guess you are obligated to respond... so here is the backstory.

As many of you know, I'm very happy with the Musilux product. I like how it feels, looks, wraps up, and performs. We've had a few threads around here talking about cable... and there are people who feel they can hear some difference in cable and others who say it's impossible to hear differences in cable... but I think we all agree on the reasons to use quality cables in our sound kits. Up to now, in our industry Canare StarQuad has been the defacto standard. Since we covered this at length in the other threads I won't get into another detailed discussion here... but suffice it to say that I think Musilux is a superior product to StarQuad.

SQ is accepted as a necessary cable architecture because the quad twisted internal pair helps to reject RFI and EMI... in conjunction with the 95% braided shield. I put forth the argument that with the solid 100% shield of Musilux that their should be little difference in EMI/RFI rejection in practical use and real world application with the two different cable architectures.

Canare makes a cable which sells for DOUBLE the cost of SQ, but nobody ever talks about it... it's DA-206. I think the only reason nobody talks about it is because it sells for twice the cost of SQ. By the way, DA-206 is also not SQ architecture. The DA-206 is built like Musilux.

Why would Canare offer two different mic cables in two totally different price ranges? Well DA-206 is half the resistance, one third of the capacitance, and half the impedence of SQ... so it sounds like maybe they're using a better grade of copper conductor in this cable doesn't it? Yes DA-206 is slightly thicker cable, but the internal conductor gage is only slightly different... from 21 to 20ga. You'll notice that the performance differences in SQ and mini-SQ is slight... even though the difference in gage is double... 21 to 23ga. So again I suggest that the main reason that Canare is getting way better numbers out of DA-206... and selling it for twice as much... is because the quality of the copper conductor is higher... higher purity, etc.

So where does Musilux fit in? Musilux specs out extremely close to DA-206! Musilux also specs out very close to Klotz cable that sells for 5 TIMES the price of DA-206!!! And yet Musilux is very well positioned in the market... call it 30% more $ then SQ or call it 30% less $ then DA-206... or call it 80% less $ then Klotz. The fact remains that Musilux cable specs out in the upper registers of mic cable at a cost that's just a little higher then Canare SQ... and at a cost that's WAY LESS then many other high-end cables.

Finally, and perhaps one of my personal favorite reasons to use Musilux is because it coils and uncoils great... it's a joy to handle and throw out, and it's not a pain to wrap up. In shorter lengths like in my mixer bag the butter soft cable runs tight bends with no resistance and I can have tails coming off of gear that manage like soft rope. This lack of physical resistance makes twisting and lining up the pins of an XLR effortless for short runs... the bottom line is I like this cable because I just think it's a joy to use.

So why did they put a link to DVXuser on the wirelux site? Last week the inventor of Musilux called me... he said he was googling Musilux and he was directed to our discussion here. This is a passionate guy who truly believes in the Musilux product (like I do)... so he tracked me down and called me to say thanks for supporting the work behind his engineering. Obviously all those specs were no accident... he felt there was a hole in the cable market, and that a superior cable which competes with all the highest-end cables of the world, yet priced within reasonable competition of standard SQ, would be a success. So he called me to thank me for my public support of his work, and to say that he wanted to put a link to DVXuser on their site. Naturally I said "cool!" and there you have it.

Now here's a little further reading if you're not bored yet... which will explain my own obsession with finding people who are exceeding the norm... and then doing my best to get the word out:

I put the Musilux guys in the same category as the guys at Sound Room. I think this is a great company that may be smaller then some of the giants out there, but they are driven to create superior products that are competing $-wise... and I admire that.

If you get to know me you'll realize that I think many good ideas and good products (and good people) can be lost in the jungle of mediocrity... cream doesn't always rise to the top. Whoever gets to the top first can impact how far up the cream will rise... naturally this process... I mean THIS ONE right here... all of us talking about it... is the grass-roots way to show you the cream.

I'll be the first to argue that 80% of the product inside of your local WalMart is total crap, yet there's a WalMart everywhere... In an ad Paul Harvey said the average family who does ALL their shopping at WalMart will save $140/year. That number STUNNED me... you mean that's it!? Jeez man... get your tools at Sears! Leave that Stanley junk on the shelf. Buy a nice shirt at Khole's instead.

Momentum is a powerful thing... it's a scientific law in fact. All I'm trying to do is push against that giant ball for a few seconds to show you that there are other choices.

Very cool! Love the Musilux! :love4: Never would have heard about it if it weren't for Matt. Also couldn't agree more regarding the plague epitomized by WalMart but I won't go there.

Thanks, Matt!

Id like to add K-Tek to that list. Again, small company, personal service, innovative and realstically priced products.

I refer ESPECIALLY to their efforts with the K-Zep (which I will be receiving soon) and trying to work against the rycote monopoly that plagues us all - c'mon Manfred, how bout a K-BBG?

Wait, are you talking about that breakfast cereal?

But seriously. Their cable is only a two conductor wire cable, not 4. I prefer 4 conductor wire cable if I can get it. It does better over longer runs. However, I'm sure thier cable is great. I like their website.

I want to repeat that I never said SQ wasn't decent cable... all I'm saying is that Canare makes DA-206... which is two conductor... just like Musilux... and it is ALSO 1/3 the capacitance, 1/2 the resistance, and 1/2 the impedence... and all those numbers add up over long runs. Oh yeah, and DA-206 is TWICE the price of regular SQ... so why would Canare make it? Apparently somebody thinks those specs mean something... and for anybody else who thinks those specs might matter (or if you simply want the piece of mind in knowing that your cables spec out with the world's best) Musilux gives you that for an extra cost of about 30%... not 100%.

I have both types... I've got tons of SQ cables (L-4E6S... same as yours... guaranteed... check the jacket)... but I easily prefer the Musilux. It's good stuff.

Dan... I'm going to make a bunch of cables in many sizes and have them ready to go... sorry for the delay on your latest order... some people on the board have figured out how to force me into getting them done faster by paying ahead of time... then the pressure's on and I can't sleep until they've shipped! D'oh!

Since this is a shout out to Matt thread, I just want to put in my two cents. I just received my order of his marvelous cables and I couldn't be happier. Matt is an amazingly honest and genuine fella and he is also a great contributor (and thus resource) to the board.

Thanks a bunch Matt. Can't say it enough.

Kevin.

I'm not trying to be argumentative. Sorry if it came off that way. I'd love to try those cables out, but I don't need any right now.

No problem. Gee, fi I knew that a little electronic green stuff is all it took, I'd be stealing some more zzz's from you right now. :Drogar-Evil(DBG): Seriously, let me know how much and I would be glad to pay for my order in advance. :dankk2:

I checked out that site finally and I'm definitely cheaper (and better).

Here's the bottom line on my cables...

As you know by now I prefer Musilux. I won't say that SQ is a bad cable, but this is about Musilux and that's the only cable I will be making until something happens to change my mind about the superior quality of these cables. I've ran them over 2K watt fresnel power cables that are as thick as bratwursts with no problems... all the worries about EMI and RFI just haven't been any kind of issue for me so far... In my experience, and the one thing that I am aware of every time I use these cables, is just how nice they throw down and how easy they roll up... the supple character has made these a joy to use.

I'm just a guy who likes audio. I'm not in a position to have a ton of stock... so color choices (so far) have been limited to the options that I think are best. Black is obvious... but then I had a hard time deciding between blue and gray... because both of those colors are still really neutral and anything but bright. Ultimately I chose blue since blue is universally "left" and because the blue Musilux just looks great. It's not a bright blue like Canare SQ... it's a cobalt blue... plus it's the only blue which matches Neutrik's blue factory connectors... which is icing on the cake.

So for now those are the color choices... black and blue. Most people who buy several pairs of cables follow my advice to go with those options and a few have chosen to stay with all black, but it's totally up to you. A "base" cable is the chosen length with silver solder and silver/silver NEXT GENERATION Neutrik connectors. Personally I think this cable as it comes is about as good as it gets... and after that I only charge just over my cost for upgrades such as black/gold connectors and color coding.

Here is the base pricing:

100'/ $80
50' / $45
25' / $29.50
15' / $25
10' / $21.50
7' / $20
6' / $19
5' / $18
4' / $16.50
3' / $15
1.5' / $14.50

Then after that you can add options to any cable and the cost is the same regardless of the length because it's only a matter of terminations. This is PER CABLE not per end.

Black/Gold NEXT GENERATION Neutrik Connectors / $3
Color Coded Neutrik Boots / $2
Color Coded Neutrik Rings / $.50
Black or Blue RipTies for Cables that are 10' and UNDER / $2.50
Black or Blue RipTies for Cables that are 15' to 50' / $3.25

Here is a picture of Dan's cables that he will receive tomorrow or the next day:

Here are Bartoy's cables from last week:

Finally I want to reiterate that I am CHEAPER on ALL my cables then anybody else for a cable of this level... by a good margin! If you check Markertek please be sure to look at the DIGITAL XLR cable prices if you want to compare! Do not compare these to basic StarQuad cables because that's as bad as comparing a DVX to your kid's handycam and saying the DVX is too high! The specs on this cable are on par with Canare DA-206 and KLOTZ... The DA-206 is OVER TWICE the price of regular SQ cable and the KLOTZ is over TEN TIMES the price of regular SQ!

You can check anywhere on the net... I'm 40% cheaper then Blue Jeans Cable! We have members here who thought they were reasonably priced... So it has taken me a while to figure out what is the lowest reasonable price I can charge to do these w/o getting totally burned out and this is about it... the prices may change at some point. If I wanted to compete with everybody else out there for a comparable cable then I'd have to RAISE my price... but so far I still enjoy doing this and I'm proud of every cable that I've sent out.

I will add my $.02. I have a few of Mat's cables. I've been in audio for about 30 years so I have and have used quite a few cables. I'm not sure I "hear" any difference with my prior cables but they sure are nice. THey handle very well and are very flexible. They lie flat and don't seem to kink and get twists. Everyone who has seen them has commented on them, well the folks who know anything about sound anyway. The Blue is very nice and color coded connectors... Very nice. THey have been used in lots of strange places and have yet to pick up any RFI, that not say much since I didn't really have a problem before, but it means they are at least as RF free as other top of the line cables. Great guy to deal with.

Looking for some suggestions on how to solder the Musilux for use with some field equipment I use for finding underground water leaks on municipal water systems. Equipment is simple - amp, headset, and several types of microphones that use either piezo or seismic sensors with standard TS 1/4" phono plugs. All work is outdoors so equipment is subjected to full range of weather elements: humidity, hot summer temps and winter temps below zero. Work conditions also put me out where RFI and EMI are quite prevalent - I constantly work around overhead or buried electric and other communication utilities. Sound quality is critical for detecting and pinpointing leakage, came across this thread and I am hoping the Musilux can enhance the performance quality of my equipment setup. Cable runs for the equipment are short, usually about 6 feet. When I have to repair or replace the phono plugs I use G & H Show Savers, straight at the mike end and 90 degree at the amp end. What is the best way to solder the two conductor Musilux & drain wire for this setup? Sincerest thanks!

Hey Matt! I haven't seen you around the Audio forum in a long time. I'm glad to hear you sell cables too. I will probably grab a couple 25 footers and see how they stand up against the old Hosas! Yuk yuk... Gotta get some jobs billed first. Hey you didn't post the shot of that cable. I'd like to see these beauties.

Cheers!
