Matrox Parthelia or a transcoder?

Hi everyone,

I plan to connect a client monitor to my editing machine. I read a lot about the Matrox Parthelia that offer a dual display + and output to a ntsc refererence monitor (compatible in real time with avid). I know it's possible to do with a transcoder.

The question is, between the Matrox or the transcoder, what I should purchase? And if the transcoder is the best solution, do you a brand of transcoder (or model number) or something like that?

Thanks!

Are you using Xpress Pro 5.x? If so, the Matrox cards are reported to no longer work with Avid. If you're on 4.X then I believe they still work.

You have two other options: 1. Mojo. Sure it's a bit pricy, but it's the only other way to get synchronized output to a client monitor from Xpress Pro. Plus you get all of the other advantages with Mojo. 2. Transcoder, which could even be your DVX. Just plug in the firewire, and then run your composite or S-Video from the camera to the display. If you don't want to tie up the camera, then something like this would work:

Hope that helps.

Also, keep in mind that the output from the Matrox Parhelia is 1/4 resolution and while it is in real-time, you're not seeing the entire image and therefore I wouldn't trust it for color correcting, etc.

A transcoder will display the image at full resolution, but you may get a delay between the image on the screen and the audio from the speakers.

As far as I know, a Mojo is the only device that will give you full res output while maintaining audio/video sync in real-time.
