Matrix Revolutions - Terrible Compositing?

Ok, so I just went back and watched this movie again. Is it just me or are parts of this movie absolutely terrible in the VFX area? A ton of the composites stuck out like a sore thumb. Most notable was the fight between Morpheus and the Agent on the highway/truck. Wow.... Color matching on that shot was very poor and someone used WAY too much matte choking...

To add to this, while we have WETA pumping out Gollum and (for the most part) good composites during the same time frame... compare this to cheesy animated flying Neo...

Is this just me?

yeah its a little subpar but they were trying really hard with what they got i think. with a human forms they still havent prefected it now i think neo looks alittle to fake at some points but thats what you get. for a VFX driven films series machinese and lanscapes are what shined the most they did a great job but it it can still be noticable... speaking of weta whose ****ing idea was it to have digital water in king kong very noticable in the scene where they are leaving the island man its so bad i couldnt take it my eye!

plus the martix movie was trying to knock those two films out within 6 months of another... so scarifices are made.... i just wish it wasnt on the story....

Yeah, the VFX in the 2nd and the 3rd Matrix sucked in some spots. There where some shots where I questioned if they'd remembered to turn the textures on when rendering, gawd.

They should have left it at the first and been done.

If i recall correctly, they didnt even have the money to finish the Matrix movies, and Keanu donated his own money to the Bros to let them pay to have the VFX finished, so he got it done on a budget, probably why its not the best VFX compositing, but still more than passable, if that could be said about the movies then wed have something :)

3D stuff in Matrix were as far as they could get in the year they were created. Maybe not to realistic. But for all the other effects I'll have to disagree, they were top notch.

I'm always surprised when I look back at a movie that I thought had decent FX as see as many holes that are really there.

I was looking through "Blackhawk Down" for inspiration to help a friend out on a project. I remember thinking the compositing work was pretty solid when I saw it in the theater. Then I came accross the shots where they fastrope into the city. Whoo Boy! that is some nasty Nasty matte work. Their only saving grace is that the shot is so quick and there's so much cg debris kicking up in the background.

Budgets, time, volume of work and internal politics. Look at huge chunks of Kong
for similar issues.

Funny thing is that in many cases, the work you're comparing is being done
by the same artists. We move around quite a bit :)

Have you seen the King Kong extended cut... During the swamp attack there is a faked guy under water scene that was... well, terrible. It's a swamp and you can see through thousands of feet of swamp water... uh, I'm not sure but I think swamp water is a little more mucky then that.

Whoa, wierd the thread title shows up as Revolutions in one place and Reloaded in here.... odd. Well anyway, I meant Reloaded for the most part!

Very true. :D I'm not saying this to suggest that WETA is the pinnacle of FX, I'm just curious why the effects were spotty in places. Especially on such an FX intensive sequence like the Morpheus/Agent battle. It's just sort of weird to see great work and poor work all mixed together.

Very true! I've been thinking about going off and becoming a compositor myself. Hence the reason I've been analyzing all these FX heavy movies so closely as of late. :)

Ah this is news to me.... can anyone confirm this? That's a bit surprising.

What sort of internal politics are you specifically refering to here?

Gregl: Thanks for the link! I never knew about the FX difficulties. That certainly helps explain things. Yeah, I hear hours suck for VFX work but hey - after I graduate with my combo Physics/Computer Science degree I wouldn't mind spending 5 years or so compositing for movies. With my degree I can leave anytime and either go back for a higher degree or find another job. It'd just be a blast to composite for a while!

Cynic: Ah, thanks for the link! Geeze, there's a lot I never knew about the behind the scenes happenings with these movies... good to know!

My problem with the FX in those films was the high talk from Gaeta. That guy was hyping those effects so much you thought they'd come up with the real deal. Then you go see the film and the "Burly Brawl" turns out to look so fake it was laughable. You can't tell me he didn't know... No way he could be that overconfident. Right?
