Matchmoving with the 5D?

Hey all you 5Dusers.

I am wondering if anyone has managed to try matchmoving 5D footage yet. I did a quick google and didn't turn up much.

I might be taking a look at the 5D for an upcoming show. Waiting on getting some test footage back from a buddy of mine to run some personal tests. But has anyone had any experience with matchmoving the 5D?

I don't anticipate any major issues. I pulled a successful track from an HV20. But I am mostly just curious.

Yeah, I've got a web series that I'm going to start this month and one of the things is going to be matchmoved credits like Panic Room. I was planning a camera test next week. I'll let you know how it goes.

But like you, I don't see a problem. The footage from the camera is more than awesome for my action thriller web series. Plus with the firmware upgrade and being able to dial in your shutter speed, everything should be good.

Due to the high bitrate and how the h.264 implementation works in this camera makes keying and tracking no problem. It behaves much more like RAW data than your normal AVCHD source. There is a lot more real data packed into each frame than say an EX3, this is a very good thing in this case.

That's why you can almost extract photos out of the video. The area of concern is rolling shutter distortion, so keep the camera stabilized. Finally, I can not stress enough how important it is to shoot a test first.

As long as you're not doing a whip pan, the 5d is incredible for keying and tracking. It demonstrates more consistant detail than any other camera I've ever worked with besides RED.

What make you think that? How would it be different?

What I mean is those rolling shutter distortion make 3D matchmove very difficult.....
in most cases, for example if I want to place a 3D object in the scene, the software assume the object is rigid, not deforming

I am not talking about doing a 2D tracking in After effects....sorry for confusion

I love handheld style, and I can do many 3D matchmove in HVX200, but not D90 or 5D II.
Of course, I think it's possible to matchmove for extremely slow camera movement

Please correct me if anything wrong..

Mck. Have you actually had issues tracking with the 5D?

CMOS stuff is a problem with a lot of movement. I ran an autotrack, then fine-tuned it, with an HV20. Same basic idea. Big and fast moves don't track well. But in my experience the CMOS does well with slight movement.

Glad to hear some people are having success. When I get the test footage back, I'll let you know how I fair.

I did some sweet motion control last night - sucessful due to the 1.1.0 firmware which allowed me to keep settings between different plates..

glad to hear this. Keying is one of my main concerns. I'm currently set up
shooting HV20 ,and BM design card, for 4-2-2 uncompressed.

Of course the HV20 is weak in other areas, hence, my desire for a new PRIMARY
cam. { a cam that can hold up for TEN ++ years }

I understand hdmi out, won't work with the 5d though , correct? ( so unfortunately,
theres no backup shooting solution here , right?}

Finally, I wonder what BUDGET priced lens would be good for screen work?

HDMI output works. When it records it's not 1080 out, but it does output live non-delayed video.

i have had some terrible experiences with trying to 3d track 5dm2 footage...mostly handheld stuff...there is just too much distortion/jello to make it work 100% of the time. but if you keep your footage more stable and clean then im sure you can get it to work out.
