matching the sun

I was wondering what's a cheap light to match the sun for my greenscreen shots? I plan on raising it to my ceiling to simulate the sun and shine down on my subject. Thx

First of all, you should tell us what is cheap for you, and if cheap means rent or buy (though I'm supposing it means buy), this way you'll get more answers. You should also describe a bit the situation, the sun is really different depending on the atmosphere, weather hour of the day....

I will go the cheap route when explaining this.

It depends on what kind of day you want to simulate. Lighting a chroma to insert that person in a dark day with just some sun streaks hitting the ground needs a different light than a sunny day.

In the first one you need more contrast between the light zone and the dark zone, thus the power you'll need from the head will be lower as you can darken the no sun area easily instead of getting a stronger head (a redhead with some opal diffusion looks nice , in your case a work light with the spill controlled might work, just make sure that you bounce the light so that it creates a small fill in the dark areas of the image, always depending on the shadow contrast of your background).

But if you are trying to light a sunny day you'll have to take in account not only the sun light but the fill light which usually when the sky is blue is really strong. So in this case you'll need a strong soft fill light (I would use two redheads with double white diffusion or a big silk high pointing down, for this job I've used a bed sheet held by a strange contraption...and it worked hahaha) and an even stronger sun light, which if you had money would be a 1.2k HMI or more (if not the strongest hard light you can find, maybe a 1000w worklight?), I find that using some opal gives a nice and pleasant look for the viewer, but that's personal preference).

sorry but I don't have enough time to explain more, hope you find your answer,

have a nice shoot!
