matching image to other cameras..

I am intending to film a gig indoors with my dvx and 2 other cameras 1 a sony tr900 and a pd170, previous experience especially compared with the tr900 is that the dvx image is much colder and bluer and I would like to adjust the camera so they record similar, as there will be varying different colour lights would be easier to match on camera then post.

can anyone give me a simple guide to which settings I might alter in the camera to make warmer picture? and which settings I shouldnt touch?

many thanks

The simplest "fix" would be to white balance all three cameras from the same reference just prior to beginning the project. If you have a production monitor (and a simple way to switch between the three sources) then match exposure by viewing all three while they are all focused (and framed) on the same object.

I probably wont have a monitor with me, though may investigate that , tried whitebalancing and checking before and thre is a big difference between cameras, which is why I would like to adjust my camera if possible

If a manual white balance doesn't get the three cameras close, and you don't have a production monitor, there isn't too much you will be able to do.

The last idea that I can offer is that you should shoot a color reference chart on all three cameras at the head of each tape, all from the same location at the same time. This will give you a color reference that you can then use in post to more easily correct the footage to match. Lacking a color reference chart, a gray card would also be fine as it is spectrally neutral. Getting the exposure to match will be equally critical to help match the "look" from each camera.

Best of luck!

You could always use your Color Temp function (Or Chroma Temp, I'm blanking as to which it is) on the DVX to warm up your picture a little but without a monitor that might be tough.

sounds a good idea, i'll look for colour cards and try that, makes sense, then its easy to use colour tool in post to match the same colours , cheers.

chroma was the button I was thinking off, but theres a few options guess best way is to just experiment

The TRV900 and the PD170 have probably a similar color-"character", don't they?

So I'd also think about using both Sony's for shots that you will cut hard into each other and the DVX probably for shots of other scenes in the same place that can bare some transition... or other perspective (e.g. Sony's for two medium-shot perspectives on a dialogue of two people and the DVX for the full shot or for shot of another matter of the scene)

Neither White-Balance, nor post-white-balance will change the camera's color-character so you really need some hints for that.... "Same white and same black" doesn't mean "same yellow"... Too critical spectators will see differences in the brilliance of the colors, sharpness of the pictures, etc. etc. .... so I'd really think about using the camera's characters according to the scenes you are shooting.
