Matching HVX to Varicam for SD

We are planning on using the HVX 200 to shoot a couple of shots to be added to a P.S.A. that was originally shot with the Panasonic Varispeed camera in 720p. The P.S.A. was finished and colortimed in Digibeta. We would be adding our HVX shots to the Digibeta master. My question is, seeing as how our end product in Standard Definition, should we shoot in 720p or DvcPro50?

I would shoot in 720p to "future protect" the project... for the day when someone asks, "hey can we get that old PSA in HD?"

Generally, I would agree that we should keep everything in 720p, but in the case of this particular P.S.A., there is very little chance it would ever be replayed in HD.

Because DvcPro50 is less compressed than the HVX's version of 720p, wouldn't it look better in Standard Definition?

Yes, if you're shooting 24p or 30p. No, if you're shooting 60i vs. 720/60p. The HVX doesn't do that well with 480/60i, so if you need the 60i look you'd be better off shooting 720/60p and downconverting in post.
