Matching HPX170 to Varicam 2700

Hey guys,

I'm in a situation where I may need to match (as best as possible) some HPX170 material with Varicam footage. I'm shooting the Varicam at 720p 24n using AVC-Intra (which looks amazing, BTW), and am using the FilmRec gamma (the footage will eventually be color corrected).

I've already shot some stuff using my HVX200 and it intercuts pretty well, but I'm looking to eke out as best an image as possible, hence the HPX170 (I also like the wider built in lens).

Anyway, if there are any suggestions for tweaking scene files, that would be great.

Lastly, I did do some Varicam/HPX170 comparo stuff a few weeks ago, and it seemed to me, just subjectively, that the HPX170 looked like it had a lot of sharpening going on, much more than the old HVX200 even. Anyone else notice this?

Thanks,

Peter

Peter,

Definitely set detail coring to +2 to reduce noise and low level detail. You can reduce detail level as well, of course. Colorimetry of the 170 is definitely different than that of 200/200A,
most different in blue, green, cyan area in Cinelike matrix. Cine D or V is not like Film Rec.

Because the 2700 has so many setup handles, it is usually easier to match it to the look of
the 170, which could compromise the former. The palmcorders just don't have the menu options that are important for matching to a high end camera, like matrix, all the detail controls, or even red and blue gains, blacks, gammas.
