Matching HMC40 to DV30 footage

Hi everyone,

I'm using an HMC40 and 2 DV30 cameras to shoot footage. Until just now, I didn't realize that I could import footage from the HMC40 using log and capture, so I'd been converting the files with a 3rd party converter to DV files. The dv30 cam imports as a 4x3, whereas the HMC40 footage is slightly wider (16x9?), even with the letterboxing set on both.

Basically, in order for my edits to not look completely ridiculous, I put the HMC40 footage at the bottom of my FC sequence, so that the HMC40 footage isn't "overlapping" the DV30 footage (otherwise I'll see the top and bottom of the DV30 clips).

Is there a way to get my HMC40 to shoot 4x3, or better yet, have the file conversion of all three cameras end up being the same size?

Thanks,
Chris

I use Avid Media Composer, but Final Cut must do the same thing. What I do is lay a format matte filter over the 16x9 to match the 4x3. You could also do the reverse, which is what I actually do when I use old DV material, I lay the format filter over the 4x3. Afterall it merely adds black top and bottom to match the modern 16x9 look. I like that format.

In either case you might consider using an upscaler on the DV footage, editing in HD, and only then ouputting it to DVD or BlueRay with the appropriate compressionis.

...how I roll.
