Matching GL-2 footage with the DVX100p

Hallo all,

I have a wedding I will be shooting in May and I am just wondering if I shoot with a DVX and a GL-2, will the footage be noticebly different? Or should I just make sure I white balance off the same card and color correct in post to match.

I just need a B camera right now and it was between the GL-2 or an HV20/HV30. I have the DVX100p (original) so I cant shoot true 16:9 so thats why I figured the GL-2 would work fine. Will the SD footage from the HV20/HV30 match the DVX?

If anyone has a suggestion on a B cam that will match the DVX better please feel free to suggest. Thanks in advance for the help!

whats your output? DVD? web? both? you should consider shooting 60i in the DVX to match the GL2 and shoot, edit, and finish with an interlaced project. otherwise, you'll have to de-interlace the GL2 footage to match the DVX, and that looks well, crappy!

the default scene file1 on the DVX should match it nicely

I have shot with a GL2 and DVX100P for many years and i would say do not do it.. The color handling of the two cameras are very different. DVX with cinegamma has a low contrast image that can not be matched by the GL2.. if you shoot DVX in 24P mode, the cadence will be off as well.

HV30/20 will match much better with the DVX, the image will be sharper than DVX, that's the only thing you to be concern about.

You'll find that the image from the HV20/30 will be much more pleasant than the DVX when the lighting is good.

Thanks for you responses!

Should I shoot HD on the HV20/HV30 and uprez the DVX footage?
What B cam do you guys use or have you guys used with the DVX. Thanks again for your responses.

i personally wouldn't, scale down the hv20/30 footage in your NLE to match the DVX. trying to uprez DVX footage can provide good results, but it won't come close to matching HD.

i too have also shot with the DVX and GL2, you just need to zero everything out in the scene file settings as well as changing your gamma and matrix to normal.

its your call though, you'd probably be better off going with the DVX/HV20 combo

Don't scale down.. the HV20/30 can do realtime downconvert of HD to SD so when you capture, it is captured as SD DV video.. Or you can shoot with the HV20/30 in SD DV mode.

With the DVX100P, you'd have to shoot in letterboxed mode to match the widescreen aspect ratio of the HV20/30..

ive shot projects on my DVX and used GL2 footy in it, to be honest theres not too much of a difference, other than the colors are a little different on the GL2 in my opinion.

Do you by any chance have any grabs I could see?

EDIT: or rather could I color grade/correct it to match better....or good enough that my client wouldn't notice?

no sorry i edited that at school actualyy. but yes you can color correct it to be better and you wouldent notice unless you knew what it was shot on basically. the average joe woulden't be able to tell

Why work to the standard of the average Joe? How would you even know how the average Joe perceives the color shifts? If you, the editor can perceive the color shifts, and you don't want there to be that shift, then do something about it, instead of sitting back and say "Well but the average joe can't tell the difference" That's just setting urself up for sub par work.

TO THE OP: Hey man, if you can afford a GL2, then why not buy a used DVX as your b cam? You should be able to find a 100/100p for 1000-1200. Which is around the price of the GL2 I believe and is soooooo much better. Plus it will match exactly.
