FS5: Matching FS5 to FS7 LC709a?

Hi friends,

We are trying to match an FS5 to and FS7 using LC709a.

What is the best profile to do this on the FS5? Is there a Hypergamma on the FS5 that is ballpark to LC709a?

I could go S-Log, but isn't S-Log 8-bit on the FS5?

I have a lot of experience with color matching and grading so I should be able to pull it off with some guidance.

Thanks in advance

Shoot Slog3 with S-Gamut3.Cine and apply the LC709a LUT in post.

FS5 shoots 10bit 422 in HD.

UHD is 8bit.

BeeHop, I don't believe that the FS5 has a CineEI mode. Hence the confusion.

Gene, without an FS5 it will be hard to answer, but BeeHop is basically correct. I'm seeing some of the menu structure on this page here and it looks like you can configure it to be SGamut3.Cine and SLOG3. If you do, the colors should be the same between it and the FS7.

Yes, S-LOG3 in the FS5 is 10-bit in HD. If you decide to go this route, keep in mind that the Viewfinder Gamma Assist is set to look correct with the camera rated at 3200 ISO, which will produce very noisy results.
Unlike the FS7, there are no MLUTS or other ways to lower the ISO below 3200 when shooting in S-LOG. Common wisdom is to overexpose in S-LOG3 by 1 to 2 stops (my sweet spot is about 1.66 stops). If you have an external monitor that can apply LUTS, you can load an LC709a LUT with exposure compensation by using LUTcalc or similar software. I have had great results using this method with the FS5 and a Shogun.

It does do S-LOG2 just as easily as S-LOG3, but as someone already said, it isn't a pure Cine EI implementation like the FS7.

Thanks Doug for chiming in. Even if the FS5 is not a "pure" CineEI implementation, do you think by adding the LC709a LUT in post / Premiere, the FS5 can be easily matched to the FS7?

What is the difference between FS5 CineEI and FS7 CineEI?

I don't have the cameras here, but going to test this weekend.

I haven't tried to match them so I'd rather not speculate one way or the other. I'd kind of be surprised if they couldn't be forced to match good enough with Resolve but I wouldn't want to say that unless I tried it myself.

The FS5 doesn't have a CINE EI mode at all. S-LOG2 and S-LOG3 are just two of the many gamma options within the paint menus section of the camera.
