Matching DVX GH4 like color to C100 Mark 2... help!

Yup, the title says it all! Gotta do a shoot with mixed cameras, no chance to shoot in any kind of log and grade afterwards. Everything has to be baked in both cameras and match as close as possibe. Question is, the DVX is kinda the A camera, with the C100MK2 supporting it. I really like the baked in "cinematic" look of the C100, but I also like the GH4 of the DVX. They are both slightly different, with the C100 being a bit more saturated (to my eye). I gotta adjust one or the other to try and get a close match, and my preference is to tweak the C100, but maybe the DVX can be tweaked to approximate Canon colors? Anybody been here before? Any tips or advise?

YThis is a little info on the Large X-Rite Color Checker Target; I have both sizes and really like them. https://youtu.be/gSZY43qsXQc I ordered mine from B&H.

It’s obvious how to take advantage of the larger X-Rite Color Checker Target but the Passport size has advantages too, especially for matching cameras in Post. You’ll see what I mean in this video. https://youtu.be/1fcve4Dp1lo

Thanks! This has opened a can of worms in my world. May be easier to just rent a second identical camera for this shoot. I am surprised at how hard it is to match looks, though!

DVX200 Check List For Multi Camera Shoots

Tests made on 5-19-16 proved that both the Panasonic AG-DVX200 and the GH4 cameras could be matched perfectly for multi camera shoots, see the following filmed at Encore Broadcast. https://vimeo.com/167443202

DVX200 Settings;

Make sure that you have Firmware Version 1.65 installed in your DVX200 camera and set the Color Palette to NATURAL then install the Panasonic Scene File commonly referred to as “Like GH4” this should be installed so that it replaces Scene File 4 in your DVX200 camera. Then always use Scene File 4 for multi camera shoots that include a GH4. Noted below are the actual settings for the “Like GH4” Scene File.

MASTER DETAIL +10
DETAIL CORING 1
SKIN TONE DTL OFF
V DETAIL LEVEL 0
KNEE APE LEVEL 3
RB GAIN CONTROL SETTING
CROMA LEVEL 0
CROMA PHASE 0
MATRIX NORM2
COLOR CORRECTION SETTING
MASTER PED -3
GAMMA MODE FILMLIKE2
BLACK GAMMA -8
BLACK GAMMA RANGE 3
KNEE MODE MANUAL
KNEE MASTER POINT 80.0
KNEE MASTER SLOPE 10
DRS OFF
DRS EFFECT 1
AUTO IRIS LEVEL ON
AUTO IRIS LEVEL EFFECT +5
V-LOG L MODE OFF

GH4 Settings;

When our tests were conducted the GH4 camera used for the test had Body Firmware Version 2.4 and the Photo Style was NATURAL.

Whoa.... these guys have a program that just made my world a bit easier when trying to match various cameras... its a stand alone color-grader but it lets me get close. Really, really close...

I am not a colorist, and I am not an expert on filmconvert. But from what I know, filmconvert is not made for perfectly matching the color from 2 different types of cameras. You can emulate various cameras, but you can also do that in Premier's Lumetri, etc. I think you need to get advice from someone who has more knowledge before you buy it. I know that filmconvert is a great product and has a great reputation, just not sure it can do what you are intending. Would be interesting to find out. Hopefully someone here can shed more light.

You are 100% right! I'm not a colorist either. Actually, I hate color grading and admit that I kinda suck at it. But having said that, Filmconvert doesn't match cameras to each other, but can get them pretty close to matching something a lot easier that I can on my own. BTW, we just got a second matching camera for the original shoot so I've moved beyond that, but am messing with Filmconvert for other future projects and am really stunned by it's ease of use both for grading as well as adding film texture. So for me, being dragged into the world of color grading (and by extension, LOG files) kicking and screaming, it really is a good tool for me to use even in tweaking baked in colors since I don't have easy access to someone who can be (remotely) considered a colorist to keep me out of trouble! :tongue:

Forgot to add... Filmconvert is adding a dedicated DVX200 camera profile soon (I've been playing with the GH4 V-Log profile which is probably pretty close) - they are working on it now.
