FS7: Matching Canon 17-120 to Fujinon 20-120

I have a shoot coming up that will be shot with two FS7s. With the crew I'm hiring, there's a possibility that the "B" cam could have a Canon 17-120 on it. I have a Fujinon 20-120 as part of my "A" cam package. It would be nice to not have to rent another lens just like my Fujinon given the availability of the Canon, but wanted to check in to see if anyone has down this specific road. I know they won't match out of the box, but I'm wondering what sort of luck anyone has had with doing it.

Thanks!

Tim

Do they need to match straight out of camera, or are you going to do it in post? I was on a shoot earlier in the year(low budget two cam commercial) and we shot on two Amira's and used a mix of Canon 17-120, Fuji 20-120 and I believe an Angie wide zoom. On the on-set monitor everything matched well enough to the eye. In other words, I don't think there is going to be a drastic difference in them. I'm not saying there won't be differences, but it's not going to be like shooting on one Master Prime and one Rokinon. I would recommend shooting a color chart with both cameras in the shooting/lighting conditions.

I think this is the one I carry with me.

I'll probably shoot in custom mode and will definitely shoot a white card and color target. I'm guessing this will be slam dunk, but as there is often a lot of talk about such things when folks are talking about lenses, I thought I'd ask the question. One of my most trusted colleagues thought it would be pretty routine, so I think I'll skip renting anything beyond the proper adapter and some hardware to support the lens.

Earlier this year I was on a shoot with about 6 F5’s which had a variety of lenses, a couple of Canon 17-120s, at least one Fuji 20-120, a Fuji 85-300, one Red 18-50, and a Canon 30-105. We put various combinations on a quad split monitor, and it seemed to me the Fuji 20-120 & Canon 17-120 weren’t radically different in terms of colour and contrast. The 30-105 seemed to have that Canon warmth, probably matching more to the Canon Cine Primes, and there was more of a difference between the two Canon lenses. The 85-300 as expected was a reasonable match to the 20-120, and the Red lens was a little bit contrastier and probably ½ way between the Fuji and Canon 30-105 in terms of colour. To my eyes the 20-120 seemed a little sharper; the owners of the 17-120s denied this which is probably fair enough when you’ve paid $ 30 000 for your lens. It may be there’s just a hint of extra contrast in the Fuji lens.
