Master PEd and other questions.

Well, here goes some questions please:

What do the following exactly mean to me?

1. CHROMA LEVEL - What does this do exactly?

2. CHROMA PHASE - What?

3. MASTER PED  -15 TO +15
Is there a textbook setting on the following conditions?  What if you are shooting at night?  daylight?  When do you select the - (neg) and when do you select the + (pos) ?

Also, it mentions in Manual that the MASTER PED serves as the VIDEO REFERENCE.  I also read where they suggest having the AUTO IRIS LEVEL set at approximatley HALF the VIDEO LEVEL.  Are the MASTER PED and AUTO IRIS related?  IF so, and you are setting it to approximatley half, what if the MASTER PED is at -8?  Does this mean set the AUTO IRIS at -4?

The questions begin.  Also, I will ask ZOOM and SCREECH this next one:

When I am just 'shooting around' what settings in the scene file do you set for the best FILM LOOK (Cinema) possible?  I know, I know, it's all over the forums, but they all seem different in opinion.

And also: In Jared's MP settings example, it indicates SETUP O and SETUP 7.5

What are the setup numbers and where?

Re: Master PEd and other questions.

Chroma Level is like saturation on a TV. Chroma Phase lines up the color to their proper vectors, best done with a waveform/vectorscope.

Master Pedestal affects the black level of an image by raising it and lowering it. The best way to deal with this one is to shoot with several different settings and see the resulting image. Playing with this tends to dictate color correction in post production becuase rasing it can cuase images to get quite milky. Bascially, rasing it causes you to get more detail in the shadows captured. There are examples online here of a scene with different settings.

Auto-Iris affects the autoexposure when shooting. Every "notch" up or down is the roughly the equivalent of 1/2 stop. When shooting with cinegamma ON which stretches the IRE to 110 when shooting for more detail, it is best to underexpose by 1 stop. Setting the Auto IRIS to -2 will do this.

Setup and master pedestal relationships can be seen at:

Re: Master PEd and other questions.

Thanks MP

I am having a blast learning this camera. Tonight I had the sun down, but the light was not gone and I setr it into the recomended 24P settings.

U
turned up MP to -8 and kicked up the shutter speed and I sware I could have shot the PRIVATE RYAN OMAHA beach sequence.

I'm thinkning the key here was the dissapearing light and cranking the shutter closed?

Re: Master PEd and other questions.

Micheal did well with his response, the only thing to add is The setup is adding 7.5 IRE to the signal for analog applications. I suggest leaving it at 0 at all times.

Re: Master PEd and other questions.

re: setup

0 or 7.5 ?

Can I please be told the difference and reasons?

IRE?

Re: Master PEd and other questions.

IRE is, I believe, a measurement of Luminance.  When you add +7.5 IRE of Luminance to an image that has some totally black areas, the black will increase in luminance to a dark gray tone.  This is done for broadcast purposes because of aloit of very old television technology that is still in use.

Just leave setup at 0 and deal with those situations that need it later.

Just to reiterate - leaving setup at 0 means total black stays total black when brought into your NLE. Setup at +7.5 brings it in as dark gray.

Re: Master PEd and other questions.

I'm with you, my friend. Punchy snappy contrast, black blacks. Every time I see washed out blacks, I think someone has dubbed an old VHS tape somewhere down the line.

Re: Master PEd and other questions.

This has been discussed a lot, but I keep mine at 7.5 Setup and -8 Master Pedestal as a starting point and run and gun shoots. Whenever you monitor out of the camera via the s-video or composite - it is analog and that is what is expected in NTSC world.

But... when going into the digital world, there is no IRE. There I observe the SMPTE standard for PAL and NTSC where 16RGB is black and 235 is white for television. If I am goign to go back to film, I can easily export RGB with the 0-255 range as needed.

That is why my chart on the website lists RGB to IRE to SetUp and MasterPedestal relationships so you can find the way you want to work. My problem with working at 0 for the same given master pedestal is that the chips do cut off at some point and 0 IRE get there sooner.

ALso, there is not the expect 7.5IRE differnce between 0 and 7.5. On a scope, there is barely 2.5 difference. If you look at the examples on this site, you can see that 0 ORE and 7.5IRE with the master pdedetal difference of 5 units, the images look awful close... if you look at my chart, you can acheive the very same black RGB value for Setup 7.5 @ -8 than you can with SetUp 0 @ -6.

Just pick the one you want to work in, and learn how the master pedestal afefcts the image in that setting. That way you're all set for you shooting conditions.

Re: Master PEd and other questions.

well said michael. ive use both 7.5@ -8, and 0 @ -6, and intercut them . they are the same thing.. the only real reson i use one over the other is if you want to go higher black you can with the 7.5 at its highest(higher than 0), and if you want to go lower, you can with 0 at its lowest(lower than 7.5)

Re: Master PEd and other questions.

John,

You must be missing page 40 of your manual ;)
(hint, hint).

As a kid, I remember being sooooo excited at Christmas, opening my presents. Unwrap, take out toy, play with it. Invariably, I couldn't get some thing or other to work. My dad would say, "Son, when all else fails, follow instructions".

Hope you're enjoying the cam, John :D

Re: Master PEd and other questions.

You are correct. And you know what? I hate when people do this! I will look on page 40! And yes, It is XMAS every day!

TKS!

Re: Master PEd and other questions.

Master Ped is used to crush blacks together. It is a great tool to make things look like they are in a black abyss.

Re: Master PEd and other questions.

Digging in the archives I thought this was a classic. John this must have been about 8200 posts ago. Ahhh the good old days.

Re: Master PEd and other questions.

Yeah this is good info to read over again.

John H, how you have grown....grasshopper. ;D

Re: Master PEd and other questions.

I didn't check the date and thought...Wow poor johns been so busy keeping this board moderated, and now he's just gettin his camera unpacked :D
